i dont think anyone expects ps2 level emulation on a handheld
hell the amount of games that can be played up to n64 emulation is still pretty huge

Damn that's a shame. It'll be enough for ps1 emulation I guess, by psp is going to get it to it's knees. I really wonder why they decide to put such a weak SoC in it, especially since mediatek's latest chipsets aren't half bad.

Okay so for a good phone controller, it would basically be like a edge clip on, maybe attaching with some form of glue.
That won't work because phones vary in thickness, edge shape, and more.
So something that should exist, is essentially a cover, but with buttons on the back. Clicky GBA SP/DS buttons. Barely visible, prefferably with some different material so you can feel them.
Most phone controllers seem to be:
1. Keychain bluetooth stuff
2. Gamepad clip ons, for full size gamepads
3. A few rare are actual covers, which would be the golden standard
There seem to be stuff like Flitchio covers, which is optimal, but its not well designed, nor is it in a universal form factor, limiting to Samsung flagship phones

I don't know about android. PSP has its own emulators made specifically for it. It also has native PS1 emulation.
