Feature-wise the two latest games, HoMM6 and 7, are easily the best.

HoMM3 on the other hand is easy, accessable, wonderful graphics and has that overall charm that just shows how much love was put into the game.

Is being a buggy, broken-as-fuck shat-out game a 'feature' these days?

HoMM7 has been patched constantly since launch, and is a good place now. Still needs a bit of work at some places, but overall it's a solid 6 or 7.

Really depends what you consider to be fun.

The campaigns get "better" in the sense that it gets more challenging and you grow up to the task so it could be considered satisfying as you build your heroes to become crazy strong.

Some missions/campaigns are just plain unfair though.

>>333064843
I actually prefer the hand crafted campaign maps to the randomly generated unbalanced crap.
>>
>>333065972
It needs a year of constant patching and adjustments. Even in it's current state it's still a cripple on life support.
>>
>>333066196

Yeah, they released it waaaay too early. I also get the impression they don't know where to take the series. On one side they have the rabid fanboys who hate change, and on the other you need to add new things to keep the series fresh.

Personally I consider HoMM6 to be the best HoMM game. Enough new features for old fans, while keeping the solid gameplay for new players. Only annoyance was the limited resources, but you didn't think much about it later on.
>>
>>333060042
relatively simple but effective gameplay and User Interface, enough content to feel substantial but no feature bloat, and an art style that is nearly timeless in the base game with only a few ugly outliers in the expansions.

>What went right?
KB->HoMM1->2->3 were pretty much a direct evolution of each other. They got a simple, working formula and they kept building on it, adding more features and layers, without shaking the foundation. Also, it came with an extremely easy and powerful map editor ensuring fan support for years to come.
>And is it really the best in the series?
It's between that and H5 3.1

>>333061582
Restoration of Erathia campaigns are essentially training mode. They're not that difficult at all. You should've gotten the complete version on GOG instead of this shitty Linux backport of just the first version.

>>333069867
5 town screens aren't good. They're nice to look at but they're not functional. You can't even see all the buildings at a glance, you can't tell what's built and what's not, it's basically a mess.

7 isn't much better but that's just because of poor artwork.
>>
>>333070198

I perfer the second one as well, the only thing preventing me from playing 2 exclusively is the random map generator is fucking crap.

>>
>>333070327
What, are you serious? if anything the big 3d space force them to make buildings that stand out and are clear as to what they do, and the zoom when you first enter the towns make it so you can see the whole thing, along with the rotation so you can select everything.

I will agree that Dungeon has samey and boring buildings.

>>
>>333060042
>And is it really the best in the series?
Yes it is.
>>
>>333071775
It was. As a single-player turn-based adventure game. The campaigns were particularly great. But some of its design decisions preclude it from being great in multiplayer or having lastability.

Plus, it took too long for them to actually polish the game with all the patches and updates, it was quite awful on release, but that happened with 5 and 4 before it as well. Will they patch fun into 7? I guess time will tell!

Alternately, buy Heroes Chronicles off of GoG or torrent or whatever

It's basically a series of campaigns (8 missions each) that follow the same character. They were originally made as demos/bonus content, but they're a semi-coherent story, follow the chronological drift that eventually leads to Heroes 4 Gelu you dumb shit and rolling around with a hero with 30 in every stat at the end of the campaign and taking on 20 ogres with 20 goblins receiving 1 casualty is pretty sweet.

tl;dr: fun

Ew. They're too baby tier, and heralded the coming of scripted, "story"-oriented map design. Pic related is a stereotypical HC map, where your enemy is walled away from you by a script until you feel comfortable to go and challenge them, all on a small, really simple map.

But it had those fuckhuge text boxes with the backstory that everybody loves for no apparent reason!

Uh... you know, that was the very first map of a campaign, I think
and these were released as demos
so yes, 'baby tier' and huge infodumps and tutorials were, in fact, included deliberately.
Which is part of why they're pretty appropriate to recommend to someone who's never played the series.

Also, I personally liked the "story" oriented map designs a lot. HoM&M3 was the first RPG I played, no lie. :^)
>>
>>333078631
