Are there any good dating sim games out there that actual involve some action gameplay, instead of mindlessly pressing next. In other words, I'm looking for dating sims that aren't visual novels.

What? Mostly it'll be action games with dating sim element rather than dating sim with action gameplay, like what some of the games suggested here.And even less of it are action oriented. Fire Emblem is more turn-based strategy than action. Rune Factory fits in this territory more with added farming as core mechanic.

Define this. Galaxy Angel has visual novel parts that needs quite a lot of reading compared to normal games because drama, lore, and shit like that. But that's what to be expected from dating sim games. If you can accept it, then there are a lot of untranslated games with gameplay for you. Use VNR if you can't be assed learning runes. GA reminds me of RTS rather than action game, but then it's as much an RTS as much as DOTA, because of the RTS control minus base/unit building and more to micromanagement of the Angels that you control.

It's the fucking best, better turn based tatics JRPG than most mainstream JRPGs. AMAZING crafting system although a bit grindy at times. The art varies in quality though and is sometimes a bit of a letdown, also most of the best girls don't have an actual story path.

As was recommended earlier, Sakura Taisen, up til 3/4/5 is basically a turn based RPG VN, games 85% dialogue and choices, 10% fighting, 5% watching the OP for the 15th time. Rance series, apart from 5/7/9 are basic rpgs, honestly alicesoft in general make good rpg/vn hybrids. Those are the good ones off the top of my head, you could go to /vn/ to get some real answers.
As for the average-terrible, well, most of the studio e.go games fit that criterea, few of them were translated over the yrs. Men at work, castle fantasia. Theres aselia, though thats another tacical rpg, translation of the "sequel" to that soonJust kidding, JAST wont do shittheres plenty more but i cant think of any others right off.

Kakyuusei 2. Elf make crazy promotion of the game to make a comeback to the industry, with one 13 episode anime and 2 hentai OVA, and release date of the game the same as Rance VI to challenge Alice Soft. And boy, it flopped hard. All because some fucktard thinks it was a good idea to make the childhood friend main heroine in a vanilla romance game:
1. Already has a boyfriend
2. Has her virginity taken by said boyfriend in the middle of her route
3. You only get her after she's dumped by said boyfriend
The results are not pretty, to say at least.

He doesn't exactly dump her himself. There's a scene where she waffles back and forth and decides she kinda wants the player-character and her med-school boyfriend is like "lol ok sure whatever."
I didn't like her story because you don't do anything intentionally to cause this; you just treat her like a friend and then one day suddenly she's like "oh actually I'm in love with you" which isn't what I look for in a Kakyuusei game.
I'm just glad I had no particular expectations going into Kakyuusei 2 because it's a great game other than Tamaki. So I didn't get that "betrayed" feeling other people did.

People has high expectation because of Mizuho in Kakyuusei 1. If they made, say, Nanase, as the main heroine instead of Tamaki, Elf would get much less flak and can died more gracefully instead of in a trainwreck.
