Wizards are usually portrayed as scholarly types that learn magic in a school like setting. Alot of their spells are learned from books and usually require an incantation.
Mages are more like natural magic users. Their spells come from just thinking about it and having a strong mental constitution.
This isn't 100% the case for all of them but it seems to be the general standard.
