the stories are related as 2 is the world and what became of it after the first game
playing xillia 1 will help you understand a lot of things in 2 so you're not completely lost like who is this character, what relation do they have to us, what is going on, etc

It's a pretty good game, but the battle system at first felt a little weird. However, if you played both parts it kind of feels like a run on sentence since the areas are identical to the first game.

Would've been stellar if they didn't recycle so much content from Xillia1 (which was kind of inevitable though), annoy the shit out of with that debt system and gave Ludger a fucking personality instead of being the player's puppet for no sane reason. It's kind of an achievement that I still enjoyed most of it despite all that, due to Ludger ending up as a way more sympathetic protag than initially deemed possible.

I really enjoyed Xillia 2, though a huge part of that is because of the character interactions. Fatal flaw as people have mentioned is the rehashing, which is strange because the main game felt kind of short at the time.
Combat's a lot of fun, Gaius and Ludger were a blast.

Although I personally believe Hearts has been the best modern tales game to date. But I prefer the battle system of Hearts since it feels and plays like the older titles which I heavily enjoy more.

I'd say it's overrated, but /v/ likes it. The game shamelessly copy-pastes everything from Xillia 1, which was already rushed as fuck and full of obvious copy-pasting. Like all harbors being exactly the same and many of the fields being virtually identical flat areas encased by mountain walls, but with a different set of textures. In many ways they felt like quickly slapped together mmo field maps, but more claustrophobic. Xillia 2 reuses all the old areas and enemies and on top of that tacks on a "dark world" gimmick so that they could rehash previously visited areas even more, but with a grainy filter over the screen. The plot isn't bad at all, but the pacing is shit because of having to pay back Ludger's debt to advance the story. This is in no way difficult to do, but it ruins any real sense of progression or being on a journey that Tales of games, any many other jrpgs aim to have. It's obvious that they designed it this way because the game has very few new areas. The battle system saw some improvements, but the rpg mechanics were made worse. The allium orb system sucks dick compared to the lillium orb one since there is less interesting interaction for the player. In the end the game is what the first Xillia should have been, but it still has plenty of problems. At least it's not as bad as Zestiria.

But besides these the characters story quests and sidequests like the EX Monsters and Coliseum are fun. Some of the later chapters start to get pretty cool aswell worth it if you can pick it up cheap.
Anyone know any good places to get emulators for the older tales games? Specifically Tales of Destiny?
