Because the PSP games in the series looked awful. This is the one Persona 4 "influenced" game that actually managed to pull it off right.

Exactly. The game borrows from a lot of succesful JRPGs of the past decade but does it just right. Like socializing with party members which makes them more useful in combat.

Haven't tried TitS yet, but I really enjoyed CS. From what I've gathered it improved on a lot of gameplay mechanics.

The game is suprisingly good though. I was already a fan of the Trails series but the game didn't win me over at first, with the cliche setting and bad voice acting. Turns out the setting is handled mostly well and the voice acting, aside from Laura slurring most of her lines, is really good too.
Setting up your Orbs was cooler in Trails, but the combat in Coldsteel is more fun in general.
Can't wait to NOT beat this game until the sequel is out since I get way too attached to this shit

CS hits you over the head with 30 minutes of clusterfuck in the beginning, but once the story actually starts its pretty well paced. Way easier to get into I'd say.

Honestly, the game really surprised me as well. The setting and characters sounded very cliché. Like a generic shounen harem anime in the way of Infinite Stratos. But the world-building, the characters and their surprisingly good voice acting, and even the school setting were really good in the end. Game took my completely by surprise.
