oculus died the moment facebook bought it. it's like google trying to do a social network, it's just not going to work. people are stupid but they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company

Anyone who honestly expected this "VR" to be anything but a gimmick deserves to have their wallets eaten. ESPECIALLY after Facebook bought it.

The other options aren't much better.
>>
>>333025704
>they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company

Completely untrue, the average consumer doesn't mind being fucked sideways.
>>
> Sony introduces VR for 400
> "hey thats pretty cool, mass adaption is needed in order for VR to succeed in the long run"
> Sony introduces additional $400 PS4k for the optimal VR experience, everything else will be total shit

And it's ruined.
>>
>>333025814
You must not have checked with myself or any of the people I've shown it to.
>>
>>333025928
What the fuck did you expect? Did you think the PS4 is able to properly render the required minimum for a good VR experience?
>>
>>333025704
>they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company
No. They just dont want a VR headset for browsing facebook and no gamer ever expects Zuckerberg to make a single good game.
FB wants it for social only and the social people dont care. Oculus will bomb hard.
>>
>>333025704

Facebook fucked it but not because of Skynet paranoia, they just restricted the project too much.
>>

>400 dollars machine
>400 dollars VR headset
>100 dollars camera and move
>retail price may be higher
>shitty framerate and reasolution
>no games to play

>VR is shit anyway, will fail

>>
>>333026014
>Did you think the PS4 is able to properly render the required minimum for a good VR experience?
not at all

I hoped they would somehow pull something really creative and make it worthwhile regardless
>>
I hope VR fails, I didn't want another generation of dumb gimmicks like waggle. Hell, at least waggle sometimes added to gameplay, VR is just about the "experience". I guess there's some extra control with head tracking, but I have yet to see that used in any meaningful way that couldn't also be done by a keyboard.

I tested one of the oculus versions out, it was alright.
Kept bugging out so that I had to look down to center the view.
I could see it being a neat novelty thing in a few years, if they get res and refresh rate up, cost down.
Screen door effect was a bit annoying and it the head movement wasn't quite fluid.

I think VR has a promising future, but it's also maybe 10 years or so before we actually see it develop into something more than a gimmick. The VR we're seeing right now is like the first attempts at 3D games.

Man future generations will look back at VR the same way we look back at people smoking in the 50s nowadays.

While i agree with you the technology can't improve without early adopters. If a sizable portion of current adopters followed the logical course (waiting for 'better' tech) then there might not be enough demand to drive creation of better tech, or at the very least, progress would be very, very slow.

Imagine, for example, if Nintendo's Virtual Boy had been successful, we probably would have seen 'Virtual Reality' systems showing up in more refined forms, or as addons around the PS2 / GC era, but because it wasn't successful the entire trend just died for another 20-30 years.

As a beta tester for the Vive, it's cool but genuinely gimmicky after a while. I will keep saying this until people get it. No, you can't say you tried it and understand. Have it in your home for a while, and you'll see how much the current content will keep you interested. This shit's going to take some years. Not worth being an early adopter at this stage unless you have stupid amounts of money.

The whole sense of presence can be the killer app, but we need demo kiosks in every Walmart in the country for it to be experienced.

Also, the PC had no killer app when it first came out and there were competitions to make it do anything useful. Early adopters wanted it anyway.

Dude, that's not how it fucking works. If that were true the 3DO would be successful cause you could say that 3D graphics itself would be a killer app.

>>333028164
Who knows?

Nintendo tried motion controls and glasses-free 3D and neither of those managed to stick around passed their respective gen.

Sony tried Playstation 3D and that died a horrible death.

Microsoft tried camera based motion tracking and that failed.

Everyone and their mother is trying VR and that's failing.

About the only thing that's really stuck around is some form of touch screen gaming that went on mobile, tablets, DS, 3DS, Wii U, Vita and PS4. Nintendo are doubling down on multi-screen gaming with both their DS consoles, the Wii U and it looks like the NX will use it in some form. None of the competition use it though so you can't really say it's changing gaming.

If the NX being a console/handheld hybrid, I could see that turning heads. Especially since the Vita already provided the groundwork. Sadly, like dual screen gaming, I don't see the competition jumping on board so it'll be doomed to Nintendo only irrelevance.

But at the same time, that room scale content is the gimmicky stuff I'm talking about. What's out there right now doesn't make that much great use of it for long term fun and good content is really lacking in length - basically demos at the moment. Also, tons and tons of shovelware.

They do it because VR mode only plays comfortable if the speed of movement is the same as in real life.
If it's faster, your brain spergs out and you can get nausea or headache because your eyes and perception aren't used to higher speed / gravity.

From what I've read any game that requires moving has to place you in a cockpit of some kind to keep your brain from getting angry. Simulating fast body movement doesn't often go as well.
