gameplay was good, Vaan sucked.
This game would be probably one of my all-time favorite games if whoever designed this system had any goddamn brains.
Game's still great, but this always puts a damper on my enjoyment of it.
While the license board idea was dumb, I actually liked the gameplay itself, especially if you had the 'live' setting where using the battle menu didn't pause the game.

The game was impossible unless you knew where to go to pick up critical things like mp restoration, hp boosts and battle lore. You practically had to look up the whole grid and plan.

It's literally just level up, unlock gear from the grid and the gear will be available from the store.
It's not even hard to grind the licence points if you need since every enemy gives them.
When you're above lvl 20 you can just go to Dalmasca estersand and kill lvl 2 wolves for like 15 minutes and you get over a hundred LP

last I checked, hats in dark souls don't have item requirements. Neither does armor in general.
Dark souls 2 had some but it was usually strength required to wear heavier armor, which makes sense and isn't the same thing as a poorly designed way to work job points into a game.

I don't understand why people can act like this is such a hot button issue. He is literally nothing. I don't know how a fully customizable character that you don't even have to use past the beginning and who has almost no dialogue can be seen as detracting so much from the game.

Mostly because it's glaringly obvious that he and his not-girlfriend were shoved in at the last second to attract a teen demographic. The game would've been better it if were from any other character's perspective, save Penelo, who only exists because of him.
He bogged down the first 2-4 hours of the game with events that amounted to nothing, and they had to pull in a second character just so he'd have a cardboard cutout to talk to, and neither of them are hardly fleshed out characters.
The only thing Vaan and Penelo are good for is porn.
