Do you think an abandoned mall would be a good setting for a horror game? What about an abandoned mall planet?

HURRR DURRRRR.
>>
>>333008668
Nevermind, I remembered to use reverse image search. Great idea, though, especially if parts of it took place in the daytime so there would be light/dark contrast between the stores and hallways.
>>
>>333008881
it is abandoned dumbass, it's no longer functioning as a mall.

Just because it still has electricity and isn't dilapidated doesn't mean it isn't abandoned.

If you were to leave your car in a field and walk away it's abandoned, it doesn't only become abandoned after some arbitrary period of time

What would the story be? Generic "walk around from jump scare to jump scare listening to logs"?

It might even be creepier for the mall to be empty but not dilapidated. Like when you go to one right at opening time in the early morning.

Rent is too high for the amount of actual profit generated by the stores. Big box stores and Amazon have killed many, many malls. I own a small vidya store that specializes in refurbishing old systems (like, the NES, SNES, etc) and repairing/reselling the things and games for the same. I make usually about 3000-4000 a month, and the storefront is the first floor of my row-house, so the rent is effectively my Mortgage, which is about 800 a month.

For a store front the same size in the dying mall about 2 miles from me, it would be 2500 dollars.

That's why they die, they are too expensive to support the businesses that they try to attract. The only ones that survive are places that are right on top of things like Air Ports; their exsistence depending on tourist traffic.

What do you think would be some good mechanics for a spooky game based around an abandoned mall?

I really like the abandoned mall planet idea, that your character crash landed there and has to survive for a certain amount of time before help comes and progressively spookier shit keeps happening. I remember there was a thread on here about that idea years ago and people had some great ideas. Shame no one's ever implemented it.
>>
>>333011390

Because people bring the things to me to sell after they go around to yard sales and good wills and the like, and I do sell stuff out of the store as well, and people bring me their shit to fix. I do sell a bunch of ebay though, yes.

Idiots, why not sell them on ebay and cut you out?

How long you been going and how long did it take for you to become profitable?

I'd like to do something like that.
>>
Are there any ghost towns that aren't quarantined by the military? I want to explore a ghost town (including trespassing into abandoned houses) without getting shot or poisoned by an infinitely burning salt mine.
>>
Okay so game idea.
You go to an abandoned mall to play some airsoft or paintball with some friends. You discover that the mall has inhabitants. Are they monsters? Ghosts? Hobos? Either way, they're fucking your shit up and you gotta find your douchebag friends.
Co-op included, but players start the game separated from each other.
If it's monsters and ghosts in the mall than crank up the mystic shit to 11 and have it so if you try to leave, like by opening a door, it just opens to the other side of the mall. You can peer outside the windows and things look normal, but the doors don't work yo.

dunno man, there are scene transitions and the music keeps going, don't think it's ever broken up.
it's spliced in to add some spookiness.
>>
>>333011595
If you've ever played a game called Eire, I always wanted a game like that in a mall. Letting the player use spray paint to mark their path was a great idea and the monster was surprisingly spooky, except it had a horrible killing animation. I wouldn't want anything scripted, just the monster roaming. My plan was to base the monster's aggressiveness on how much time you were taking to progress, and the amount of noise you were making. Taking it slow would make the monster react slower, spending time stalking and watching, while rushing would cause the monster to attack on sight.

>>333011912
Nevada is what you're looking for. Huge amount of government land that is impossible to actually patrol. And there just so happen to be many ghost/boom towns on said unmonitored government land.

A game in an abandoned mall would be cool but I do feel like it needs some danger, walking sims are all well and good but they could lose their appeal quick.

What about something like, I don't know the story reason yet but say you got draged and trapped in an abandoned mall by a group of people, not to many but a good few, say...8 or something, and they've brought you here to hunt you, they are a group of serial killers and get off on hunting people down.

So the main gameplay would be stealth I suppose, trying to hide from these people, but they can also set up traps, some lethal, some not, or some that impede you in some way.
So, you could trip a wire that just sets off an alarm alerting them to your location, or maybe you step in a bear trap which slows you for a while and leaves a blood train till you bandage it.

Obviously the scares would be focused heavily on the mental side of things, so the hunters would have to have lots of dialog recorded so if you are hiding and they walk past you never hear repeats of what they say, and they should each have their own personalities and quirks and will split up into smaller teams or on their own, so you never know if its gonna be 1 guy or 3m or even all 8.

Their quirks can play into their killing techniques as well, for example say there was a "crazy docter" hunter, he would play stealthy like you, so he could get close and tranq you, if he does its not an instant death, you would wake up and be tied up at the pharmacy or something and would have a short time to rush, free yourself and leave before he cut you open.
But if you escape he won't be so willing to tranq you next time and might just kill you outright.

So yeah, something like that could be cool.
>>
>>333014739
That... could work. Especially in Portland or something. Hipsters are idiots.

Depends how dilapidated the building is. If it's very dilapidated then it suggests it's been long abandoned and people/creatures have come and gone, to the point it's practically wilderness. If the building is in borderline pristine condition then the atmosphere is completely different.

Huh, didn't mean to post ayys, thought I changed that to Jersey devils. Either way glad to see some interest. I had three separate styles for each of them.

Dover Demons would be the most stealthy of them all, they would scuttle around and hide from the player until ready to strike. An idea I had for them is that they themselves are completely silent, no breathing or steps, and even if they touched something or bumped into something, it would still be quiet. To really see them, the player would flash their light, and you would see the reflection from their eyes.

Jersey Devils would be large and loud. They stomp around, huff when frustrated, and don't bother with avoiding things in their way. They also have glowing red eyes, so it'd be very hard to not notice one. However, they are fast and strong. While with other enemies you could potentially seal off an exit by locking the door, the Jersey Devil would smash on through.

The cult would rely on traps and numbers to catch you. They are the smartest of the three, but on their own the weakest. Unlike the other two, the cult knows you're attempting to escape. The other two will chase you, while the cult will wait for you. They leave out traps and bait the player with things like batteries, keys, food, health supplies, and weapons.

I got goosebumps just imagining that, though I get goosebumps pretty easy when imagining creepy shit past midnight.

Sounds neat as fuck.

I think the player should have means to fight, but make them hard to pull off, weak weapon that aren't good against Jersey Devils, slow weapons bad at hitting Dover Demons, and the Cultists just have a numbers advantage over you.

Like let the player use a pipe wrench or something as a melee weapon.

I didn't say every time you got caught you had to be captured, it would depend on the person that caught you.

The docter guy might catch you once(which you could still die from if you don't escape in time) but then outright kill you the second time he gets you.
The guy with the chainsaw might just run you down as soon as he sees you.

It would all depend on the character and how you've interacted before.

Like say, there was another guy who's first interaction with you is to capture you, like the docter, say in your first meeting you get away just by running without him capturing you, well then he might still try to capture you again the next time you meet.
But then lets say someone else played differently and in their first interaction with him they hit him with a pole or threw a brick at his head, THEN got away, well he would be angry and more likely to just kill you straight away.

So each hunter would do things differently, some might try to kill you straight away, some might want to capture you then kill you, some might try to capture you several times before giving up and just trying to outright kill you and some might want to inflict as much pain on you as possible first, like injure your legs so you can only hobble away before trying to kill you like a wounded animal.

Some would be better at tracking you then others, which is why if they are grouped together makes them deadlier besides just having more of a chance to kill you.

And I guess if there is gonna be an anger mechanic that should play into i for your gain as well right?

Like if they are in a blind rage chasing you it should fuck with them and make them more likely to fuck up.
Good trackers would have a harder time finding you, they would be more likely to run into their own traps shit like that.

i think a cool idea would be the experiences of a janitor or groundskeeper who is the sole maintainer of an abandoned haunted mall who has over time learned and adapted to the various ghosts and their properties/habits
he documents everything he learns and knows what areas and ghosts to avoid
and theres probably one sealed off area he refuses to even write about deep in the epicenter of the place

Glad to hear it. I plan on putting combat, which will mostly be melee based with one exception of a pipe gun which would only be obtainable by killing a cult member with one. The weapons the player begins with are usually pretty bad, like a nailed board or a PVC pipe spear. The cult would be the most combat focused while the Jersey devil would be the least. The cult would start with better weapons, though still of low quality, such as kitchen knifes, pipe guns, and tools like hammers and wrenches.

i thought house of leaves was a pretty good horror story, sans all of the pretentious stuff.
i'd love to see that specific type of horror more often. that is, horror that is essentially just the product of rules of nature and laws of the universe that just haven't been discovered yet or are not fully understood
the metro games kinda did it in sense that its suggested that intense radiation could possibly fuse the soul of a person to a place, or some kind of quantum flux traps them in a parallel dimension

That sort of happened in Shadowrun lore. Corporations built large megaplexes that contained everything one needed to live, from utilities, to living space, to stores, to offices and other work zones. One corp decides to leave the administration of such a place to an AI. AI goes rogue, shuts everyone in and prevents outside help. Slowly starts experimenting on everyone to find people who can become technomancers.

For a long time I had reoccurring dreams about living in a massive house, a really nice mansion, it was all a single floor and it was just an infinite sprawl. Doors and hallways and rooms all over stretching out forever.

I wasn't alone I'd run into other travelers too. I say travelers because we'd never settle down in a room, we moved through the house constantly like nomads, I don't know why we had to keep moving, we just did, and once we closed a door we would never go back through it, sometimes I'd join the other travelers and sometimes I'd be alone but we were all exploring this endless house.

The weird thing about this is that even though it was reoccurring off and on for a few years and had such a weird concept it never really made me feel afraid or unsettled it was just something we accepted.

I think it could make a neat horror game though.

This please, not knowing whats out there can be a lot more terrifying some times and would fit perfectly in a game centered around an abandoned mall feeling. If possible it'd be incredible with changing corridors that change right after you turn a corner or some such, like right after your first turn if you turned back to check the exit one last time and it was just a wall instead. Shit could be hecka spooky.
>>
>>333021119
The problem with this is you cant create imminent danger with an enemy you cant see. Especially if the player realizes there is no physical enemy and they cant be forced to move.
>>
>>333021101
Could be pretty great. For reasons you csnt be sure of, you just have an instinctive feeling that you must keep moving through the endless Mansion. There's no time limit imposed but you get audio and visual ques from the environment and other travelers thst you might be with that it's time to start moving.

Staying longer things start to get antsy with shit starting to happen. Nothing overtly spooky. Things start to not work, wierd audio, eventually ramping into shit outright dissappearING and shit.

Survivale mechanics with food and supply gathering. Occasionally running into other travelers who may be hostile or have lost their shit.

Needs to be some terrifying shit to go along with goING back into a room you left from.

It has be something like that. There has to be a real sense of danger to work. Offscreen shit like that, things being thrown into your line of sight, things happening in the distance far enough to where you csnt really tell, or shit happening right behind you.

The Doctor Who statues are a fucking terrifying concept. Envionment manipulation and distorting the players sense of reality is great for an ever mounting sense of dread. The player has to be effected by whatever it is and eventually is going to have to get some sense of it
>>
>>333023574
Simple. Mall starts out vaguely populated, and you go in looking for like, pizza or something
OBJECTIVE: FIND PIZZA
Then the further you go in, the more things deteriorate and fewer people appear and darker it gets till you freak out and turn around. Only what's behind you is no longer the same. And suddenly you hear slamming, mechanical screeching, low groans.
And then the lights behind you begin to flicker out
OBJECTIVE: ESCAPE

I remember playing an indie game a few years back on an old PC Gamer demo disc set in a mall.

It was top down; you played a kid that hid inside a mall until after closing time. You had to find keys to unlock the main doors to escape; but inside the mall with you was a monster.

It was a horror stealth before the idea was played out. You had to go around the mall finding the items you needed, but had to be mindful of noise otherwise the monster (constantly running around) would find you. You had items to distract the monster like things which would make noise.

You also had a fear mechanic; the more scared you got the more likely you might faint, and the more noise you made. You had to close your eyes to reduce your fear, but then you couldn't see anything. You could hear the monster's footsteps though.

Terry Pratchett's interpretation of malls was pretty good, they were a parasitic life-form that seeded itself onto planets, creating spaces where people would visit like a venus flytrap. The mall starts with bizarre markings which transition to poor Engrish then professional signage as the mall learns the native language.

Shopping carts were like an autoimmune system, protecting the areas where new space was being constructed by the organic tissue behind the walls.
