Yes, you can hold down O and you can win at the fodder enemies we have seen.
But seeing the Iron Giant fight, I am convinced it will be more complicated than that. I suspect it was designed that way so that you can hold it and attack repeatedly so you don't have to mash buttons, but timing between attack, switching weapons/magic and dodging will be a big factor in the major game.
I'm sure a good 85% of the game you could hold O for and get through dungeons, assuming you are level appropriate. But that is like any other FF game where you can just attack to win.

Single attacks have no clear satrtup or end and lack any real feedback to know when they start or hit many times specially with the effects.
