Play 1-9, but be weary that 2 and 8 are stupidly broken pieces of shit.

Start with 6 or 9, (choose which one you think will you will like better, go with your gut on this one they are both amazing games)
And then go from 4 to 9 and if you want you can play 1-3 later, play 10 afterwards I guess and 12 too, be be warned that they have their share of differences that put some people off.
Just try them yourself and take your conclusions afterwards.

It went MMO. MMOs pretty much ruin every series they touch because an MMO requires a lot of upkeep and support. Even if the MMO is good, it changes the company.

Also started FFIV and VI on the DS and GBA respectively and IV is very unforgiving. While VI seems like some type of bad action-comedy that doesn't really grip me.

I want to disagree with this, but I can't. The next game they made in the mainline series borrowed FFXI's combat system but streamlined it and introduced the gambit system for an easier time playing singleplayer. At least it let you control all of your party members, though. Haven't felt like any of the games after XI were as good as the ones before, but that could be attributed to Wada being a dumbfuck, too.
