The franchise is built on trying to make each sequel as different as possible. This means throwing out everything the previous games did, including the good things, and starting over fresh.
Couple this with how a dozen different teams are making FF games and you have no quality control.
My suggestion is to just give up on Final Fantasy and play Dragon Quest. Which still has the same core team working on it for the last 30 years. And keeps everything it did right in the sequels.

This actually happens everywhere though, not just on /v/. The final fantasy series was based on each game being different and unconnected to the previous ones from the very beginning. Yet people get upset every time a new game is announced because it doesen't look or play like the old ones.
