Unreal Tournament 2004/Quake 3. Both excellent arena shooters that do their thing exceedingly well in slightly different directions. I'm partial to UT 2k4 if only because I spent an uncomfortably large amount of time playing the Ballistic Weapons mod for it on top of the base game, and Quake 3, while great, had such a steep difficulty curve for MP that by the time I got around to playing online I was going up against people that had played nonstop for nearly 8 years.
>>
>>332985137
>I just can never finish something I have to emulate for some reason
Same here. I usually just end up buying games I can easily emulate because I know there's a better chance I'll actually finish it. With emulation it's so easy to get overwhelmed with all the games you can play it's hard to just pick one and stick with it.

I want to say Goldeneye, but it probably hasn't aged well
>>
>>332978818
It has one or two good sequences, but overall I would say no. The game has a bad habit of getting in the way of its actual gameplay in favor of being this weird little sci-fi thing that doesn't really go anywhere. Prey is probably a better candidate for a Raven Software game.
>>
>>332984773
As an actual shooter Infinite is pretty fucking bad. Guns looked great, but outside of the grenade launcher and hand cannon felt like ass with non-existent impact. It's got some lovely scenery and the weapons are certainly nice to look at(though I loved the modded weapons of the original Bioshock far more), but as an actual shooter it's pretty weak.
>>
>>332984773
>Battlefield 3 turned Battlefield into DLC crazy console trash, yeah BF2 and expansion packs but that was a precedent set by 1942 and the concept of DLC didn't really exist in the 2/2142 erra.

Bioshock is a great FPS and I should of included it on my list
>>332981332
but infinite's fundamental FPS mechanics completely remove it from being considered a good example of the genera.
>>
>>332985763

I've only ever played the game on harder difficulties, so I enjoyed the versatility of navigating the battlefield with the skyhook and managing my resources well. I can imagine the game giving a weaker impression if none of that really mattered on lower settings and it was just mindless.
>>
>>332976952
I feel Jedi outcast (be a fucking Jedi), halo 1 (silent cartographer, blood gulch), half life 1, counter strike (dust 2), Go back in time to play pre-crap tribes ascend (fucking skiing) are addable. Quake 2 can get axed. I don't feel like doom 2 is essential either.

Amazing =/= essential

>>332978851
laughinggirls.rar
>>
>>332986113
I hear where you're coming from. To me, personally, weapon feel and sound design are super critical to making a good FPS, and Infinite dropped the ball on both counts. Skyhook system was good though, kinda forgot about it to be honest.
>>
>>332986168
Doom 1, 2 and 3 are all essential because they pave the general template for FPS sequels

you either get the 1 -> 2 jump with more levels, guns but generally the same gameplay or you get 2 -> 3 that is the big reboot sequel that changes things that it then popularized
>>
Starseige Tribes, Medal of Honor, DOOM II, Perfect Dark and Halo 3. If it's more modern, Team Fortress 2, Half Life 2: Episode One, Tribes Ascend, Gears of War, and Serious Sam 3: BFE.
>>
>>332986068

Battlefield 3 flat-out has great FPS mechanics and maps. Having tons of DLC map packs shouldn't detriment the game as it has a strong foundation, and you really can't blame them for jewing out as they were just following Call of Duty's example. It sucks all the same, but the base game is worthy of praise, and there are worse games in the series.

>infinite
>8/10 at the very worst

Preamble:
BioShock Infinite is the cancer that is killing video games. It takes every lesson of good game design from the first System Shock forward, lights it on fire, then urinates on it out of spite. Tack on the nonsensical Burial at Sea expansions and I’m almost convinced that Ken Levine is suffering from some undiscovered type of brain tumor. In trying to cater to the “video games as art” crowd, he’s created something that fails at being a game and as art.

>Every gunfight is dull as dishwater in the game, and even on the hardest difficulty there are no tactics or strategies required.
The vigors are boring because they’re just the plasmids. I’m just shooting people because, well, that’s what you do in video games, right? And I say this as a person that likes shooters.

>the plot:
Throughout the entire segment, I was all too aware that I was playing a video game trying far too hard to be meaningful or resonant. It comes across as silly, childish, and naïve. Like a fifteen year old telling you that the government is, you know, real bad man.

>the twists
That anyone is finding the writing intelligent or thoughtful blows my mind. Last night, when I hit one of the big plot twists, I almost felt insulted that it was presented as one. Elizabeth bellowing “yeah, well, just because I want a puppy doesn’t mean I’m going to get one!” had me laughing. I mean, seriously. Who writes this shit? Haven’t we outgrown “this is great writing…for a video game” yet?

>Elizabeth
Elizabeth isn’t horrified by my ruthless slaughtering of innocent civilians; indeed, she’s actually making small talk with Booker about his life. When Daikatana tried to pull nonsense like this over a decade ago, everyone laughed Romero out of the industry.

The forced campaign and general trend towards CoD style action was its death

BF2 was by no means a sim but it did have a certain feel to it that 3 throws out the window to get the CoD audience.
>>
>>332984326
Your list is shit due to you putting Halos 2-3 on the good tier instead of the great tier with Halo: CE. Your list is even more shit because you decided to put Halo: Reach in the okay tier instead of the shit tier. And then you dare put the fucking Metroid Prime Trilogy in the list and try to call that boring, slow, auto aiming pile of trash great along with calling those games a FPS. Do yourself a favor and redo your list so it can be less shit.
>>
>>332986862

This smacks of a multiplayer bias. The community for some of those games is utterly dead anyways.

Hard Reset should be moved down at least one tier. I like it but it's incredibly repetitive, I wouldn't call it better than half of what's in Good tier.

Source is a better counter-strike than GO. You can split hairs over hitboxes all you want but Source's modding community blows GO's out of the water.

Is Crysis 2 even on there? I would personally put it in Great tier.

Otherwise, not a bad list.

It is to Serious Sam what Other M is to Metroid, or DMC is to Devil May Cry

In TFE and TSE everything was perfectly thought out: the location and frequency of pickups, the number of enemy spawns from difficulty to difficulty, the secrets, the damage that each weapon did relative to enemy health, the speed of every enemy, the enemy variety per wave, all of it lent to a nice, balanced game feeling that was fast and fun.

Serious Sam 2 throws all of that in the garbage. It's piss easy in comparison to the originals, the enemies have poor AI and poor design and are slow as fuck. The game has a shitty story, shitty weapons with no punch, NPCs, poorly done vehicle sections, and more failures. Pirate it if you're curious, it's a fucking experience.

Butcher Bay is legitimately one of the best single player campaigns ever made.

True. The sequel was disappointing in everything except the combat... I hear the third one might be an MMO if it ever gets made.

>Metroid a "fps" and in the same tier as Halo, cs:go and Crysis

More like officially shit tier taste list. Your list only proves no matter how many games you play, some people will always have shit taste.

Most posts in this thread are inferior games, especially on technical and graphical standpoints
>>
Stalker games definitely, or at least SoC. Crysis, HL1 and 2, and SS TFE, TSE, and 3.

>>332993539
>>332994567
Honestly think the two games are overrated but I went in expecting stealth so that might be why. Still, didn't really strike me as a "classic" like most people hold it to be.

Good pacing, good gameplay, entertaining story and unique setting.

Graphics arent bad for the time either.

not FPS but Max Payne 1 and 2 are also shooter essentials

>tfw Black never got a PC release
I mean, I could just download a PS2 emulator but I don't have a gamepad to play with.
I played a bit of Black on Xbox but I remember it being kind of hard to see and trying to shoot people without headshots seemed impossible.

Yeah, Blood is great. I like it better than what I've played of Doom and Quake.

Also System Shock is essential too I think. Most people like 2 better but I haven't played too much of 2 yet.
>>
>>332996336

You haven't completed either Doom or Quake?
>>
>>332996190

Fuck yes it is.
>>
>>332996412
Nope. Haven't beat Blood either but I got farther in it than the others. I beat the first episode of Quake I think and I don't think I really played past the first level in Doom. I like FPS but those kinds of games aren't really my favorite types.
>>
>>332996680
>I really played past the first level in Doom
you didnt play Doom then
>>
>>332996773
I always just feel like quitting after the first level. Can't bring myself to play past that. Maybe I'll get around to it eventually.

mfw I see all great fps games but can't get a desktop not even a small tower one because my room is small and there's no room to put it.

I was wondering if I should buy a Gaming Laptop or a Tower that hooks up to the tv but I don't know still
>>
>>332997617
Most of the games mentioned will run on a toaster so you should be fine with a laptop. Though you can get really small computer cases that shouldn't take up much more room than a laptop.
>>
I had a much longer list, but tried to keep it to just games I've played, and down to one dozen.

DOOM
Duke Nuke'em 3D
Half-Life
Perfect Dark
Jedi Knight II
Aliens versus Predator 2
Battlefield Vietnam
F.E.A.R.
Halo CE
Half-Life 2
Portal
Mount & Blade (there is FPV, it's intense)
The Forest

A baker's dozen
>>
>>332996190

That game is pretty gruesome, and it's awesome. They get the whole occult theme/feel down very well.
>>
>>332987140
>>332987234
That's fucking bullshit.

The HD versions have a number of changes that make the game worse.

For one, using the double barrel shotgun against kleers in the original version was a great way to get rid of them. One shot at close range, and that's it for them.

Meanwhile, the HD version fucked up the kleer hitbox, so that doesn't work any more unless you are literally point blank and even then only half the time.
>>
>>332998781
I think the HD version of one of the games removed a section with zero gravity too. Probably TSE since I don't remember anything like that when I played TFE.
>>
DESTINY
>>
>>332998939
They removed a bunch of the "weird stuff" since the new and "improved" engine couldn't handle it.

GoldenEye 64
Halo 2
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun
Unreal games
Half-Life (all of them)
Deus Ex

I think most underrated was Red Faction. I had a fucking blast with the geomod technology with multiplayer maps.
