I too am wondering about this. Both talking to townsfolk and opening presents on the ground and such seem to be difficult but the people on youtube are fucking normie scrubs who are likely used to a controller so..
It's a sign that I'm getting older but I find the idea of trying to hook up with 15 year olds that still live with their parents pretty creepy. Most of the gals I was interested in were actually someone's mom.

The mouse controls are consistent. You have to click on the square that objects are standing on. This can be unintuitive at times with NPCs or other taller sprites since you might want to click on their face or upper body, which is clicking on the square above the one they're standing on.

Here's a better idea: pirate it. If you like it enough to justify a purchase, buy it on steam and support the developer. He's actually worth supporting unlike 90% of indie developers these days, as he didn't resort to crowd funding, early access (aka "charging the consumer to beta test for you"), or any other bullshit that indie devs are want to do.
I can't speak on Rune Factory because I always hated handheld games, even in emulated form. Rune Factory never clicked for me. I was always more into Harvest Moon SNES/64/PSX, which Stardew Valley surpasses.

Ok, if SV also has combat then my comparison with RF is more fair, and again, everyone seems to agree that the combat is worse than RF3. Then well, it seems like I'm not buying this considering I can just play RF3 which everyone seems to agree is better.
