If you actually want to enjoy Rune Factory 1 and 2, you'll need to play them in order before the later Rune Factory games. You could just skip the first two I guess, as it isn't like there is some continuous plot throughout the series. Rune Factory 4 has some minor callbacks but you don't need to have played them to really enjoy the game.

Rune Factory 1 was really slow and awkward. It was just trying to figure out its system, and really didn't implement it well. Don't get me wrong: I do like the idea of a more old-HM time management applying to the game. But it was just far too easy to hop into a dungeon and fish/mine while restoring energy with the rune factories that time and stamina management concerns were just a joke.
Rune Factory Frontier was just better in every conceivable way.Except Runies. Fuck the Runies.

It's unnecessary micromanagement. People were fine with farming because that was the point and because you get something out of farming. People were fine with giving girls presents because that was the point and because you got something out of it.
But you don't get anything directly out of Runeys. You manage the Runeys so that you you could do the farming and the presents, and so it didn't fuck everything up. They didn't like the extra layer of busywork.

I preferred the older Harvest Moon games, where a year took 364 days and it took a lot of work to accomplish most tasks. It felt more like an accomplishment to get places, and more interesting with just the little things - like seeing what was on TV each day.
Newer games made everything so easy, it doesn't feel rewarding even to plant and harvest the "difficult" stuff. I have to agree, that with the newer format, I just prefer if they go all out and use the Rune Factory formula.
