2014 - The impossible happens: The board gets worse with the whole GamerGate shitshow. It's literally impossible to have good threads.
2015 - /v/ shares a huge userbase with /pol/, and leaks all over 4chan and the internet. Any and all games that get any kind of popularity/goodwill is instantly despised by the boardmind. There's no more shitposting, just posting.

I came here in 2006 and thought things, while somewhat shitty, were still fun until the /vg/ split (which was good) and the great mod crackdown of 2012 (which was bad). That's when shit really started going downhill.

I think Eternal September is the reason. Not so much we have new people come in or where they come from, but just that there were and are too many coming in too quickly.
I think 4chan just got too popular. I came in in 2006 and didn't dare make a post for about a month when I got a feel for the site. Sure, there were people back then that immediately hopped in, but they were so outnumbered by the established users that they got put in their place quickly.
But since 4chan really hit national and international media attention, the wave of new users was just too much. They'd come in, see a post or thread that was a joke, not understand it, mimic it or crank it up to 11 to try to fit in, then it would snowball with the next wave of new posters.
For example, I remember the first few happening threads on /pol/. People knew it was a joke and it was just funposting. But quickly people were being fucking serious about it.

I disagree. Even though the barriers to post on 4chan are basically non-existent, it still wasn't popular or well known for several years. Then it's reputation would scare off some people from even coming onto the site.

It's a similar concept though. Before, the influx of new users was both smaller and drew from a certain kind of people who were easy to assimilate to chan culture. Most of us probably found this place from some other forum or shitty flash site, so there was an existing knowledge of how the less mainstream parts of the internet work. Now that internet culture in general has gone public, the new people flooding in now are fresh out of twitter and fucking facebook.
