Second, Smough was not an illusion. In DaS3 we have a confirmation that Ornstein was an illusion, but Smough was in all likelihood not. There isn't any mention of him leaving the city with Ornstein.
Furthermore, the REAL Ornstein that you fight in DaS2 is only slightly harder than the one in DaS1, so the illusion was pretty fucking good in the first place.

Thanks to Miyazaki's amazing cop-out, time is convoluted, and it's likely that kindling the Flame with a Light soul will do very little to help, no matter how strong it is. Burning a Dark soul, on the other hand, rids the world of more Dark, therefore strengthening the Flame.
