I used to really love them especially since they were canadian, but Dragon Age 2 was the game that made me disillusioned with western AAA games. What a steaming pile of shit that was.

Fallout 2 is the only one I can think of that did it first, GTA 4 doesn't have functional dog companions without mods (not that it's a CRPG, but anyway). So, it wasn't that common at the time the game came out.

I get that you don't like the game, but the interesting characters were widely praised for being a good mix of tropes and original shit when it came out, and people liked the writing. The prison break quest was particularly good with all the different character combos they wrote in. I just want to come here to say that DA 2 is an amazing feat, by two points of view.
First one, I never saw a game with a story SO TERRIBLE, literally, I've read stories written by 3yo better than that garbage.
Second one, seeing as the game was supposed to be a mod then midway through it's development EA forced Bio to make a full game out of it, and they only had NINE MONTHS of development time, the game is absolutely amazing for what it is.
