I just dropped about $40 on the all the mainline games of Metal Gear Solid I - V Ground Zeroes for my PS3 from a random sale.
On a scale of "It's a steal" to "Full Retard" how did I do?

Just play them in release order. MGS1 is one of the few PS1 games that still completely stands up beyond nostalgia IMO. The only thing you really need to know going in is that, if you're bad at sequences were you have to mash a button really fast, don't set the difficulty high.

At risk of minor spoilers, there a part in the game where you have to mash circle to win, and if you don't you get a non-canon bad end. The difficulty you set the game to determines how long you have to mash for. If you're real bad at mashing sequences like me, don't set the difficulty above normal.

I would say your biggest mistake was getting GZ and V on an older console. I'm not sure of version differences but playing V on 360 was rubbish. Shame you can't get them all on PS4, I would buy one just for that to be honest.
Get a PSP/emulator and you'll be able to play all the games from the series.

character creation/decoration
codecs were expanded and funny
CQC was deep and could set up combo headshots if done right

stages were amazing
the amount of Uniques and how they affected the battle
gametypes
training mode aka Chaos Mode
you could create your own games to level up, chill with friends, or make up META games like SWAT, Zombies, or Vampire.
It had Kerotan and GAKO.
