Other M killed the Metroid franchise. Metroid Prime just took a different direction than the 2D Metroids for a while. It honestly didn't even deviate that much from it, just offered a z-axis and was slower-paced.

Here's the thing, DKC was and still is fantastic in its gameplay and polish.
DKC 2 improved what DKC did and provided both a new and familiar experience. DKV 3 was obviously were the love began to fade and unfortunately never lived up to the previous two games. Sure you can say it isn't bad, but I think a worse thing a game to be than bad is to be generic and unreplayable.
There's nothing great or bad about DKC 3 so there's nothing to return to, and nothing to learn from.

Well, you also have to consider that the original team who worked on DKC1&2 didn't actually work on DKC3. They were busy on Project Dream, which ended up as Banjo Kazooie.

Replaying these three recently, I have to say DKC3 gets a bad rap.
It is certainly my least favorite of the three (2 > 1 > 3), but it still a very very good game on its own. The Lost World and bonus barrels were great.

I tried to like DKC3, but it and Megaman X3 had the same negatives for me.
-the soundtrack was really bland, especially compared to the previous games. I only like one or two tracks from each of them.
-the graphics seemed off to me. Darker, less vibrant, and too samey.
-the enemies were all rather bland.
-bosses were boring
-power-ups were less than stellar
-disappointing marathon final bosses
