For-profit MMOs (which is almost every one of them) are inherent time sinks to make you pay more money through microtransactions. The quality of design will always be secondary to how much money a growth-centric software company can make.
Most private servers wind up being horrible because of inter-admin drama.
You're better off playing a good co-op game instead. MMOs are seriously overrated and most of the "classics" are looked at with extreme nostalgia goggles. For fuck's sake, everyone complained about Star Wars Galaxies being a broken mess while it was still active.
Don't go looking for good games. Just wait for a decent-looking one to come along, even if it takes more than a year.

Tides of destiny is known to be worse then the others, though I've never tried it. RF4 is GOAT, i must have put well over a hundred hours into it. Objectively one of the best games for the 3DS, and comfy to boot.
