shortcuts and open world ruined burnout because they don't allow you to develop track memory properly, it also changed the design focus from making a few great tracks to just making a city with some start and end points.
the worst part is that GTA does open world races by utilising the map but having set checkpoints, it's the difference between racing and commuting.

shortcuts and forgiving traffic
open world isn't the issue in itself, the issue is that they didn't design any race routes and just gave you a vague destination, so all the races boil down to the same route

The racing part is fun but I loved the Crash gamemode from Burnout 2 the most.

Paradise's world was awful, unless you knew exactly what was coming up. The map was too zoomed in, so you only saw maybe 3 seconds ahead even in the slowest cars and in endgame cars sliding eyes onto the map meant an traffic accident.
