BG1 is shit. The entire cast of main characters literally have 3 lines of dialog at most before starting to repeat themselves. BG2 is vastly superior, but still shit compared to Torment.

I've always found Baldur's Gate boring as all fuck. Enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2 more, as well as NWN2, Planescape or the new Shadowrun games. Funnily enough, Pillars of Eternity had the same problems.

In BG1 everyone is at an incredibly low level and therefore pretty easy to kill. To compensate for this they made a whole heap of them. Sadly this meant that the quality of each character was drastically weakened.
I think they just expected people to stroll through the game leaving a string of dead companions in their wake.

Guess so, I mean it was early enough in the RPG genre can't really fault them. I played it later though, circa 2010 or so, bunch of companions without any writing would have been a dealbreaker for me.

Well, every single BG1 companion was adapted from character sheets and backgrounds one of the devs' college pnp group used to play, with slight modifications. So for them these characters were all developed, it was just not really communicated to the player. All those background bits? Part of the campaigns they were playing. The whole thing is a kind of in-joke, really.
This is the big difference between BG1 and BG2/EE companions. The latter were written as characters, the former were a salute to old friends and good memories of playing together.
