Yes, its good. After an initial "what the fuck why is this a big game and not an iPhone app" shock you will "get it" and its fun till the end.

Loads of secrets to unlock, you can beat the game without solving even half puzzles.
Just keep in mind that despite the game being open world, there is a correct assumed order to do things. If you cant solve a puzzle, go somewhere else, there will be easier puzzles that teach you how to beat the hard ones.

Its a game mechanic that isn't explained to you, and at one point you run into a wall, and you have to discover that game mechanic.
When you discover it, you go back all the places you've been and find out many ways to use that mechanic.

The "get it" moment is when you realize the puzzles arent just on the tablets, they are all around the world, and you have to move around to align half a tree to the sun so you can use it as a starting point to connect the clouds, etc.

I found it pretty boring. I played for like 2-3 hours, the puzzles were all piss easy, the aestehtics were brown and boring, the story pretentious and distubring from the actual game, and honestly i couldn't motivate myself to play it longer.

I thought much of the 'story' was a bit too preachy, but you could have some fun interactions with the computer terminals. While part of the 'story,' I did appreciate the tape recordings. It was nice to see how everything fit together, what happened, where you were, etc. over time.

I'm a sucker for ancient ruins, so the setting of this game was top notch for me. I especially enjoyed unlocking the messenger locations and exploring for easter eggs (in particular in one of the messenger areas, very curious easter eggs if you dig deep enough). I haven't done the DLC, but the star challenges (the challenges after you unlock the gates for sufficient stars) were very well done in my opinion. I enjoyed their areas and their challenges.

Overall solid game from me. I didn't play Witcher III or Fallout 4, but this was my GOTY 2015.

I had a good time just chilling out playing it in parallel with my friend, it worked really well for that sort of thing. I might have gotten bored of it if I played it all alone though, it's hard to say. Really liked getting all the stars especially, it was fun to have all these puzzle rules established and then have to think totally outside them.

The witness is already overrated though. Half of the puzzles are fillers and 3 first hours are not about puzzles but observation. Before the swamp, the game is boring. And sadly, the best puzzle is near the end, and that's the only one which gave me an eureka moment.

One of the puzzles has a start point the moon in one phase, and an end point the moon in another phase.
This is completed by starting an one hour documentary movie with a moon lapse, starting the puzzle in the first minute, holding the left mouse button for an hour, and ending the puzzle at the end of the documentary when the moon shifts.

This is very tedious, but it is also "creative" to figure out.

For other such puzzles you need to move statues around so they can form a circle with terrain, etc. There was one where you had to follow a boat on its patrol to complete it.

Not really. It was 100% obvious the moment the moon was shown. It even has sparkles from the front, which is a dead giveaway.

Agreed, at the end of the game, I had exactly 3 puzzles I hadn't finished, one in each zone. And I felt the biggest plus of this game was how much freedom you had in choosing what to do next, you literally have up to 20+ puzzles available to choose from at any point in the game.

The music is very soothing and fitting for the game too (I actually listen to it at work sometimes) and the visuals are pretty to look at.

While the story is great, it is 100% optional, you can finish the game without opening a single terminal.

To summarize, I think the game's biggest pro's are the fact that each zone has a huge variation in difficulty and the extreme level of freedom you have in choosing your next puzzle.

Getting the jammer is a pile of ass because the platform is up barely too high for you to jump onto it. I'd assume you have to place the jammer in front of the laser that powers 3 turrets but THAT platform is up too high too. If you could do it though, your clone's jammer & your own could block the final 2 turrets.

If something will be out of reach, make it obviously out of reach. If its just a very tiny bit out of reach, I will keep returning to it, trying again, making sure I didn't just fuck up before, etc.
Things should either be within reach, or twice as far or more. Blocks and fences that are 2% too tall to jump over are cancer.

Indeed, the DLC is 11/10 honestly. There is maybe 1 easy puzzle in the whole thing, everything else ranges from hard to pretty fucking hard. And the levels themselves are really beautifully put together.

Strangely enough, my favorite part about it was everything about the consoles, from the forum posting with the other robots (each having its own personality and way of writing) to the absolutely amazing text adventures(pic related).

You can't jump up directly, but you'll sometimes get the "Jump to here" prompt for like 20 milliseconds (1 frame, I assume?)

Of course if you just mash the everloving hell out of the jump button you'll get pushed off your bunnyhopping recording, but the timing is tight and finicky.

You dont know what you are talking about. Portal and The Witness also use limited puzzle mechanics, because if there are too many the player is overwhelmed.
Having more, or more complex base mechanics on which to build puzzles would've made the game terrible.

It was my GOTY 2015, and took Portal 2's place in my heart as the best puzzle game I've played so far. It is not the most challenging, and I prefer the Zachatronics games a lot. But it has a theme that deeply resonate with me. To the point that the last audio records made me cry. It is intelligent, well designed, and not pretentious despite the philosophy aspect, as the texts are just picked to get you interested, and not shoven in your face while telling you "see? This is the truth! Stop wanting what you want, so you can know what you want and then want it!"

The moment I found out was when you have a very simple tablet, just a little snake figure, and you can only connect one end to the other. There are no angles or anything, just a line.
You do it and it doesnt work. You do it again, and it doesnt work. You look around and you see a river that looks the same as the line. You click on that river and you realize that the river is the board, not whats in front of you.

No it's not. The puzzles just aren't as fun compared to other open world puzzle games like The Talos Principle or Portal.

It's hardly a "secret" when it's just a hidden corridor to a dead end.

They could give you an extra piece of information that adds to the story. A voice recording of someone or a collectable that could lead to a different ending when you have collected all of them.

If you're not gonna do that and all of the "fun" is in the puzzles, then you'd be better of without the whole open world.

There's absolutely no weight to anything if not for the puzzles unlocking the video crap. And it is a shame because long series of puzzle make the whole series look like it is filled with filler puzzles. I would have prefered they removed half of the puzzles to give more importance to the other half.
I think it is why I had barely any fun for solving the puzzles if not for one of the final ones.

I need some time to pat my own back before trying the next puzzle. The witness doesn't give you this time or any satisfaction for beating a puzzle if not for the lasers, and the lasers itself are meh rewards.

Its open world so you can walk into a hard puzzle, have no idea how it works, struggle a bit and move on. Then you see some concepts and mechanics explained in easier puzzles, and a light bulb goes off in your head, and you go do the hard puzzle.

Thats how it played for me at least. Maybe if you take a different path around the island things wont line up well. Didnt feel like the game was leading me to any particular direction, so I imagine if you get unlucky with the order in which you encounter puzzles you may feel disappointed.

This is exactly the problem. The game is open world, but punishes you for exploring. This would be half as annoying when the game wouldn't make it so unclear what route to take in the first place.

There are two games recently released that I liked, but got bad reviews because people failed to understand game mechanics.

One is The Witness, and the other is Darkest Dungeon.
In The Witness you have to understand that if you cant solve a puzzle you have to walk away from it and go do other ones. The solution to the puzzles too hard for you now are often locked in easier puzzles that introduce the new mechanics.
In Darkest Dungeon people failed to comprehend that you should retreat bad runs. I guess gamers arent conditioned to surrender when the fight is going bad. Losing rookies is fine. Surrendering to save veterans is fine. Walking away from hard puzzles to come back later is fine.

As I understood these concepts early I enjoyed both games.
