Lab zero already had a a team/studio/engine to use from skullgirls. Iga didn't.

There's nothing inherently good or bad looking about 2D or 3D. You can have bad looking and good looking games in either category.

What's important is the style, few 3D games attempt to push non photorealistic styles since photorealism was the dream for the longest time.

They're starting to put more effort into non-photorealistic 3D games now, as more people do it then it will become easier to do and look better.

Mechanically, they're both confined to the 2D plane. Assets wise, both are using 3D, apart from Indivisible's characters.

Only real difference is the combat and animation - and 2D animation is much more of a fucking bitch to get right than rigging, mocapping and cleaning up a 3D animation.

More comparable than you think. Bloodstain's dev time is probably a case of a moderately new team getting set up, financially and otherwise.

Not to mention Indivisible is obviously a long-held pet project that was almost certainly completely designed by the time fulltime development even started.

Tip for keeping programmers around;

Give them a beginning, middle and end that doesn't need your finished assets. Give them something to work towards and finish but something small and contained.

Essentially have them make a single demo stage with placeholder assets. Beginning, middle, end.

If the project doesn't have that programmers get antsy and burned out because it then feels like a forever flowing upstream swim.

Once the "Demo" stage is completed let them know awesome - go take a break, when I have another "beginning middle and end" task for you I'll contact you.

Once the final assets are done, plug them into the code and then send the completed work to the programmer before moving onto the next section. This will get them even more amped.

You need to divide foreground and background way more by color and/or lighting levels. Right now your concept goes Bright- Dark, Bright and dark. -dark.

Bright (furthest)
Dark
Bright (middleground/focus)
Dark (foreground)

Don't do that - unless the thing that you are lighting up in the background is a cue to "move there" (like moving up or into a door in the background).

It should go

Darkest (background)
Dark (closer background)
Midtones (closest background)
Neutral brightness (focus midground)
Midtones (foreground)

Reserve "bright" for things you want to call attention to - things you interact with or important parts of the story.
