Even if a correlation were demonstrated, it would pretty hard to show a causal relationship.
Naturally, a game that is more popular will have both more sales and more piracy. The question is which drives which. The pirates, of course, claim that the piracy drives the popularity and sales, though I don't think there's any real proof for this either, and there's a very strong motive for people to rationalize behaviour they know to be unethical.

The last time I've pirated a game was literally the last time I haven't had a job, aka before I reached adulthood. Also, I've watched a playthrough of RotTR and it's an awful, gratuitous, game with the same shallow gameplay as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor or the later FarCry titles. Face it, people, it's pretty fucking hard to make a game that sells millions w/o catering to casuals who'd rather watch a movie anyway.
There's exceptions of course, like the Souls games, but even those got worse with every step they took to 'reach a wider audience'. And the only reason they got popular in the first place was the stupid 'lol I'm so hardcore for playing these' meme which apparently hit certain people's 'gamer pride' weak, or rather dumb spot. Those people never 'got' the appeal and instead criticized the very reasons why DeS and DaS were so good. That's why, for example, running and general movement speed has gone up with every new game - which is a BAD thing and if you actually liked *Souls for the 'right' reasons, you knew that already.
In conclusion, fuck the new TR games and people who pirate on principle and stop demanding free stuff because you're poor.

It's literally been the opposite of that. It's been gettting harder and harder to crack denuvo with each new game.
The earlier versions of denuvo had some exploits that crackers could use but now they've been ironed out and it's pretty much impossible to crack.
