So, I have never played a Total War game, I want to start with one. Which one is the best? Which ones are good, which are bad?

Also don't recommend grand strategy games, I already play them.

Medieval II and Shogun II are best
>>
>>332815705
Is Rome II any good?

I would argue the pinnacle of the series is actually the first Medieval game since it has so many neat features that were stripped away for fancy graphics in Rome Total War. Good TW games for starters are Medieval 2 for mods and Shogun 2 for simplicity (rock paper scissors style balance instead of a more realistic approach) and streamlining but the only truly shitty TW games are Empire and Rome 2. If you only want to buy one TW game I would go for Medieval 2 for the mods you can get.
>>
shogun 2 is best for a beginner

after that move on to attila

anybody who tells you rome 1 or medieval 2 are trapped in nostalgia goggles. they were good for their time but they're garbage compared to modern total war.
>>
>>332816079
It's ok
>>
>>332816079

it's better than it was at launch but attila is what rome 2 should have been
>>
>>332815705

This. Medieval II is the best, then probably Shogun II, then Rome.

I gave up on Rome 2 after a while, but it might be serviceable now. Attila and Empire are alright too.
>>
Did they ever fix Rome 2?
>>
>>332816535
They improved it but they never really fixed some of the core design problems. Attila is much better in every way but army limits are still a thing. Makes sense with the horde mechanics though.

I started with Shogun 2 and didn't regret it. A Shimazu campaign in Shogun 2 is probably the smoothest way to ease into the games. I'm playing Attila right now and it's decent, but unoptimized and somehow a little off. The politics and UI are kinda bothersome but I don't screw with it much and do fine. Cavalry is stupid good and dominates battles more than they maybe should. I've only played the Saxon campaign so far though.

I've also played Medieval II briefly, and while fun it has aged noticeably. Can't speak to the Romes, really.
>>
>>332817819
Attila is more optimized than Shogun 2 especially when it comes to multicore support it's just that S2's art style hides the low poly LOD models and minimal variety in units. Play a Roman faction for fun times.
>>
>>332818186
I think I'll go with Attila mainly because I want to play something from Ancient History, though I really wanted something along the lines of the Roman Republic. Still, I guess that will do.
>>
>>332815384
Get Medieval II and install The Third Age. Thank me later
>>
>>332818629
There is a team working on a classical antiquity mod for Attila. If you want a nice, "authentic" classical antiquity experience without the bullshit of Rome 2 I would recommend pirating RTW just for a mod called Europa Barbarorum.
>>
>>332819014
Thanks!
>>
>>332816079
At this point I'd recommend waiting until the Ancient Empires mod finally comes out for Attila if you want to play Rome 2 (they're hoping to get it out by summer).
>>
>>332815705
Atilla is up there in the best category. It definitely redeemed Rome 2.
>>
>>332819547

are they gonna fix the shitty building system
>>
>>332819547
I played the beta almost a year ago and I wouldn't tell anyone to wait for its first release judging from the first beta. It had some serious balance issues and the lead battle designer is a complete moron. Armies would deploy right next to eachother which broke the AI, all movement markers were permanently removed, friendly and enemy indicators were removed, and there were some other questionable design decisions. Last time I checked they figured out how to have horses rear up when charging heavy infantry but it applied to ALL heavy infantry. Keep in mind this was almost a year ago and there were a decent amount of team members against these design decisions so they might've removed them.

The only plebs are the faggots that think Rome 1 and Medieval 2 are good.

Shogun 2 and Attila are as patrician as it gets.

You're right, I couldn't. On release, I went back to Rome 1 after a dozen hours because Medieval 2 plays like unresponsive garbage and is fucking broken. I've tried countless times since then to get into the game, both modded and unmodded, but it's still plagued with slow and awful gameplay and countless gamebreaking bugs and incompetent AI.
>>
>>332825984
>Medieval 2 plays like unresponsive garbage
This is the worst sin. Any other total war game seems to be fine, but it takes a good two seconds in med 2 for your units to even acknowledge the orders you give them. It's unforgivable.
>>
>>332815384
Attila is the best TW game. Massive unit variety, lots of different factions, campaigns often play out differently, best diplomacy of any TW game. And the horde mode to leave your main settlement lets you totally change where you play, want to be Franks but move to Africa? Do it. Want to be sassanids but start with nothing in Spain? Do it.

But get a mod that increases the rate at which AI take over raised settlements.
>>
>>332827173
Any tips for improving performance friend?
>>
>>332827542
Unit count is the most obvious one, medium or small drastically increases performance

But if you want to stick to large/ultra you'll have to turn down a lot, do a custom battle with 20v20 and see what your performance is, then lower graphics settings. Antialiasing is always a hog so turn that down to minimum.

Or in a few week there will be a new version (2.2) of Europa Barbararorum for medieval II.

Its lacks polish of the version for rome I, but medieval II engine is way better than the Rome I.

It's better in some ways and worse in others. Mainly when it comes to pikes but I think the EB2 team ironed that out a bit and gunpowder is not a factor for EB so that's okay. Overall though you're right it's better.
