I'm just pointing out that it's a cheap trigger before people start getting on Naughty Dog's dick saying they're programming gods since that seems common these days. Fuck, someone made a thread praising UC4 for having water that reacts to objects dropped in it. It's cool, definitely, though I think it doesn't look very good still, but technology threads go way out of control with people claiming things are happening that aren't actually happening.

but it is happening. Are you aware of how "real" GI is actually achieved? Their graphics programmers must be pretty fucking great to emulate it like this with old fashioned per-pixel lighting desu, and they deserve praise for it. Besides that, yes other developers could do it but do they? Same with the water effects you mentioned. There's nothing wrong with praising developers who do cool stuff despite limitations.

I don't know exactly how it's done in TLOU but I'm guessing it's a simple trigger that causes either a colored light to be shined or some other method of coloring the surface. That's somewhat how real GI works, but in actual GI the light actually dependent on where and how the original light is being shined. It doesn't look that good in TLOU since it seems it's like an area (or screen space) effect that doesn't take anything into consideration at all and just lights up a certain space when light is shined on the wall.

Though I guess most TECHNOLOGY is posted based on being attention to detail rather than being impressive in its own right so I guess it still fits. I still don't want people going off on tirades and shit based on not understanding what's happening and that happens a lot in these and similar graphics related threads.

I know. It's a hacked in approximation though like I said above I guess it fits the thread since TECHNOLOGY is more about attention to detail than anything. I'm just salty that nobody is bothering to try and make a game with full functioning GI or path tracing and there probably won't be one until consoles can do it since they run the fucking tech advancement in the industry now. Gonna be another decade or more probably.

And it has nothing to do with consoles. Have you ever tried to write a ray tracer? I have. You can run it on the most top of the line consumer GPU out there and the MOST you're gonna get in ideal circumstances is 1 frame per second. Wolfenstein: Ray traced achieved around 24 with 4 prototype intel cards that were never meant for any kind of consumer usage and that's a game with assets from 2009. This has nothing to do with consoles.

I'm tired of PCMR shitheads who have never developed shit in their lives saying consoles are "holding back the industry" without realising that games would have to be developed for lowest common denominator hardware in all ecosystems, whether that be consoles or toasters.
