Didn't like GU much, IMOQ might be just as repetitive but the dungeon graphics and music had more variety.
.hack//fragment, the official online .hack game for PS2 has an english patch and private server at coldbird.net/fragment.
Works flawlessly on a toaster in PCSX2 or on a real PS2 there was a /v/ group but I think most people quit already. They made it easier to install and set up now.

IMOQ has a better story by far. Also the protagonist was a lot more mature.
It's pretty much widely accepted that though GU had superior gameplay, it's story pretty much killed everything that made .hack// good. They even blatantly had to change the lore to shoehorn fucking cubia back in.
The Manga GU+ did go back to largely correct most of this, and to set the ground work in a way that LINK would actually make sense, but by then the damage was already done.
Better hope for a reboot of this series, because otherwise this shit is dead.

Personally I like GU more. IMOQ had way too many story quests that were

The general concept of the story is much better than GU but it's so sparse and poorly paced that spanning it through 4 games makes it incredibly boring.
Not saying GU doesn't have problems of its own, but I feel like it aged much better than IMOQ. I actually wish it would get an HD remaster because it pushed the PS2 pretty damn hard.

I enjoyed the G.U. games the most, though I like them all.
I still love the original 4 but recently I sat down and tried to plow through them all and ended up having to take breaks between discs because of how repetitive it was.
G.U. I had no problem with though. I love the characters, the towns, the music, just everything. I really got sucked into that game and felt like I was playing a real MMO. The tournament thing was cool too albeit easy, and I really like that you can go out in the field and find PKers trying to kill other players and intervene, as well as there was a blacklist of PKers to kill. Fuck, I really want to play some .hack now.
Did anybody else discover the flaw in the combat of G.U. that lets you guard out of an attack with your 2H Sword in order to attack insanely fast for massive damage? I couldn't go back to dual swords or a scythe after I found that out.

I tried getting into the .hack series but what they did to it after //sign broke my heart. How the fuck are they going to split it up into some convoluted mess with different settings? Why the chibi? why leave //roots half way unfinished so you'd have to play the ps2 game to see the ending?? Man, I sometimes imagine that the only canon material is //sign and //liminality. I mean G.U. was total shit! I hated that they rebooted The World when it was so goat.
