Its not sonic team, the credit goes to segas music label, sega wavemaster. They handle all music things sega and they are award winning, and they damn deserve it. I wish people unironically enjoyed the sonic songs without calling them guilty pleasures. For the context of the games they appear in (open your heart, live and learn, sonic heroes, endless possibilities etc) they make sense along with sounding good, having varied instrumentals, and lyrics that work with the games theme. I mean even the knuckles rap in SA2 stages, the lyrics are telling a whole other story about what knuckles is feeling, where he is, how hes interpreting something, sharing his thoughts and so on. Its seriously masterful work
I used to play the shit out of Sonic Heroes as a kid, and was really surprised years later that a lot of people bash it.

I bash that game because its not fast, mostly 2D, the story has a lot of plotholes and doesnt go anywhere/no action, the jumping feels off, it has wisps, the voice acting sucks, the characterization for sonic/tails/eggman sucks, and the rivals are the worst in sonic history.

I've only played some of these games and for every case the soundtrack was memorable, remarkable or mesmerizing.
Even with the limitations they had to work with on portable consoles the Sonic Advance 2 tracks work phenomenally well. Everything between that and the tracks from Colors shows the definition of mastering a craft.

yes they are no doubts the best music in the industry and could easily rival any real band or record label. I hate when people say a song sounds cool but they find out its from a video game and suddenly disregard it. my sister is like that. she guiltily loves a bunch of sonic music but wouldnt be caught dead playing it in the car or with friends.
Every era of wave master is good, but i suggest taking a lot at some of their saturn era games if you have no experience there. There are full versions of nights into dreams tracks on youtube like 9 minutes each and the constant flow and subtle changes as the in game stage goes on (you loop around the level 4 times before continuing in nights, all on different paths) is just brilliant design especially for 1996. jesus christ its 20 years old. anyway, always give credit to segas sound division. they are a force to be reckoned with.
