I don't remember since I saw it on /a/ 4-5 years ago, but Higurashi and School Days anime were heavily scrutinized when they aired and any gore has to be heavily censored. Adapting any gory manga or creating a heavily violent game has to be toned down or it will be given an adult rating or forced to sell it as an OVA, which hurts potential sales. One notably hilarious censorship was this from the Terraformars anime adaptation, but when you look at past anime from the 70s/80s, you will see gore was very plentiful.

A lot of people don't realize that the west is actually very lenient when it comes to certain content passing through the ESRB. It's much better than Japan's that's for sure. The reason why so much shit gets censored for us is because the desire to hit a certain rating or some self-imposed morality.
