And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

1 didn't scare me at all, and I played it at launch. It had great atmosphere but wasn't scary in the slightest. Weird =/= scary. 2 and 3 were the only scary ones.

SH2 is widely considered the tamest of the three, and for a good reason: it has way less terror-type of horror, and relies more on this "whispering" kind of haunted atmosphere. SH1 and 3 really try to crawl under your skin and rip it off, all the time.
I replay SH1 annually, and it still makes me feel uneasy.
OP you are a obviously a graphics whore and going into the game with an attitude, just play a modern game, you are not going to enjoy or be scared by it with that mindset.

1's intro and otherworld parts are excellent, the otherworld is very depressive. My only problem with 1 is that too many creatures look like insects.
