How do we revitalize this genre?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgkoz5EZTok
Don't, leave them dead.
They're only dying because everyone is getting tired of the formula set by WoW.
No idea why it took 8 years for some of you faggots though.
>>332660314
stop making world of warcraft: slightly different edition.
>>332660314
yes, they are. old ones stay afloat on veterans who are addicted, and new ones die out pretty shortly because they either have too long of a time investment to get new players, or not enough endgame grind to keep people playing it.
I don't see the MMO genre dying out anytime soon, just major names to die. World of Warcraft is near I g the end of its life, but it won't kill the mmo experience. Shot if any of you have ever played a text based MMO you'd know it can pop up anywhere
Vindictus is pretty good but the playerbase is slowly thinning. The important thing an mmo should have is good gameplay or extensive character customization.
>>332660314
people stopped making sandbox MMOs like ultima online and just went for the "hey WoW is making tons of money, lets just copy that" model.
>>332661128
Literally everything BUT the gameplay in Vindictus is bad.
Make actual skill-based combat, trash the "chosen one" shit because it makes zero sense in an mmo, and put some real emphasis on player interaction and exploration instead of a line of quests to follow.
>>332660314
Stop trying to save the worst game type.
remove normies. make shit hard without revolving around "it's easy but drops 0.000002% of the time". No more pay to win. Don't be affraid of big empty spaces in your world.
>>332660314
As long as the GW1 servers are up, then there is still a light in the distance.
All the old fucks that left arena net should get together and make a guild wars 1.5 seriously.

>sponsored opinions.
>2011
>stop cloning wow
>stop pandering to care bears
>get rid of action bars/cooldowns/targeting
>stop making single-player content, it's a fucking mmo
>no linear story
>no mandatory tutorial quest before you're allowed into the main game
>get rid of instancing
>stop loot being disposable because you replace it 2 minutes later
>diminishing returns for levels/gear so someone 2 levels above you or with a slightly better sword can't kill you by pressing a button
>AI worth a damn
>a believable world instead of 'level 1 forest zone', 'level 2 jungle zone', 'level 3 desert zone'
>combat with skill, I want to aim that fireball like I'm playing fucking hexen or something, and melee like dark souls
>no cross-server mechanics at all
>no conveniences
>allow players to interact with the world. in wow you can't even put an item on the ground
>no chinese
>no f2p. If your game is good people will pay $15/month in their millions, if it's not then I don't want f2p bullshit like having to pay for a bigger inventory
>crafting that's interesting instead of mindless button clicking where the only difficulty is finding the ingredients and the
>every player is not the chosen one
>no fetch quests which aren't even quests they're chores
It won't appeal to most but will give people burnt out on generic wow clones a reason to come back. There was literally no reason for rift or wildstar to even exist they were so derivative. Do something different or stop making them.
MMO devs should be forced to play Muds for 1000 hours, they were full of innovative mechanics which were dumped in the graphical era.
Emphasize the second M in MMO, have player to player interaction be critical to unlocking more content otherwise you have a single player game with people in the background. Have grinding be something more interesting than a series of clicks that you have. Don't have quests that are literally "get me twenty bear asses". Moderate the economy so that price manipulation isn't rampant.

>game theory
Fuck off.
Is Penny Arcade dying? How do we revitalize these cuckolds?
Anybody here know if Albion online is any good? Thinking about just paying for the founder's shit but I don't want to waste my time with garbage. It looks okay from videos I've seen but I'm 90% sure almost all of them are marketers.
>>332660314
That video is pure cancer
>>332662214
>stop pandering to care bears
Absolutely this. I want a MMO where everywhere I walk I can be mugged and looted. This will restore the need to find a party to venture in the wild. This will bring back tension in MMO.
>>332662758
>>332662214
Hey this sounds great but I have no faith in the industry to make something as cool as that.
>>332662214
You forgot a very important aspect.
SANDBOXES.
Let the economy/security/quests/factions be player-driven.
Like the good part of EVE.
>>332662959
What comic is that from? Didn't these cuckolds stop making comics after they were found out to be "problematic" and "triggering"? lol

I just talk to her about something else. This reminds me of that PA comic where gabe told some nerds at his old highschool that they "run this shit" outside of it.
Your shitty illusions don't affect reality, m8
>>332662882
This is the only thing The Divisionkindadid right, and was the best thing about Darkscape.
>>332660314
Inconvenience the player.
Get rid of all of those "quality of life" features and introduce new ones that require either work or community interaction (or both).
I'm looking at you fast travel and in-game LFGs.
Balance the game in a way that older players won't feel dragged down if they choose to bring a new player along to show them the ropes.
That means meaningful mid-difficulty content, don't relegate everything good to raids.
Oh, and register all possible wiki domains, route them all to the same page, and then only fill out basic information there.
Want to know something obscure/in-depth?
Ask someone.
Basically put less focus on functionally singleplayer grindy bullshit and more focus on player interaction.
And make a fun game while you're at it.

>Runescape
I never understood why there was not a single MMO molded after Runescape, that game was pretty damn popular in its time.
>>332663362
Judging by the art, I'd say sometime around 2010 or 2011.
>>332660314
Anyone play/played DAOC? I haven´t tried it myself the but three faction system seems like a interesting design choice.
>>332664165
except runescape has always been focused on single-player shit (aside from pvp), they've only recently started adding things that actually require working with other players, and it always gets a huge backlash from the retarded playerbase. but yeah the base model of the game is really good and it'd be neat to see something work off that and make an actual multiplayer game out of it
>>332660314
>PA
>>332664165
Runescape was popular because it was a browser game that had depth, compared to the thousands of flash games a kid could play on his computer break in school. That kind of thing couldn't happen today.
>>332660557
Because time flies when you're a faggot.
>>332665336
It's sad that one of the best forms of financial advice nowadays is to recapture the adventure and exploration of Runescape while implementing a micro-transaction themed buisness model. Pay to go past a certain point, pay to upgrade your gear, pay to learn a new skill. Don't be stingy with your parents money timmy, they dont know you're spending it.

This, so fucking much.
>>332660314
Why anyone would show games to parents?
>>332666113
They cannot relate to anyone outside of talking about games.
>OH MOM you like reading the classics!?
>Well heres a game based on that youd like!
Make something new and immersive. Don't focus on endgame or fast leveling. Have content for every level. It's okay to be grindy as long as there is stuff to do at any level. Back when I played RuneScape the level cap never seemed important. During my FFXI time, I only leveled as needed, but always had things to do and explore.
Bring back old school MMO and stop catering to people that will leave the game the moment LoL releases a new character.
>>332665336
Except it still continues to be one of the more popular games and hasn't died yet (and is in fact growing)
There's clearly something special about 2007scape and I could write several paragraphs explaining what those are but I'm on my phone so you'll just have to accept you're wrong
>>332666113
>i must keep something i enjoy to myself only
>>332665851
>Don't be stingy with your parents money timmy, they dont know you're spending it.
For runescape, jagex let you buy membership by charging it to your phone when a called a number. I'm certain they did that to enable kids who didn't want to grab a debit/credit card and couldn't use cash for the online game. They could just call on the house phone and it'd charge to the phone account, being a smallish charge and less suspicious.I did it once.
>>332660314Dickwolves?
>>332660314
You'd think all that time out catching ghosts, Danny wouldn't have time to play World of Warcraft.
>>332666628
>accept you're wrong
no. You're vastly overestimating the amount of players versus bots but even if you weren't, having to maintain an old version of your game while having a newer one present to please your fanbase is hardly a desirable situation for any company.
>>332665851
Effective enough for Pewdiepie to singlehandedly save YouTube.
>>332660314
I have decent fun playing guild wars 2 with a gamepad, so no its not exactly dead, just archaic
>>332660685
That's like making a third person shooter not based on resident evil 4
>wake up in the middle of a field
>lost your memory
>all you remember is the explosion, the pillar of light and the fact that getting there could grant any wish
>for the whole game the pillar of light is visible in the distance, in the middle of new york
>everyone is trying to get there, and everyone starts out on the fields
>the closer you get to the city, the stronger the monsters are
>inside the city the monsters are gigantic and unkillable if solo
I like the idea of having a converging point instead of an open world where everyone goes everywhere
>>332668931
What game famalam?
>>332667275
why is that undesirable? it gets them customers who wouldn't even bother with the new version, and they have an extremely small dev team assigned to oldschool, especially considering it has the same size playerbase as rs3.
>>332660314
