Sure, people may not know what Pikmin or Chibi Robo are, but walk about to 100 random people, show them a picture of Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Pikachu, and I would bet 100 dollars that every single one of those people would name all four characters.
Even their mid-tier franchises like Metroid and Star Fox trade as highly recognizable. Smash Bros is hugely popular for a fucking reason, and PlayStation All-Stars went in the exact opposite direction for just that reason.
