I'd say smelter is probably the git gud boss of das2 since you'll fight him relatively early/mid game and he's highly resistant to damage while also dealing a shit ton. Most people will fight fume closer to the end of their campaign and overpower him.

Fume has a way to punish literally every playstyle. You have to git gud and learn how to conserve stamina and roll, which was never really required of you in the game.
That's why he usually ends up stomping kiddies with a 90% win rate.
Ive beaten the first 5 bosses (whichever one right before getting to firelink, vordt of boreal Valley, cursed rotted greatwood, crystal sage, abyss watchers, and also the stray demon but he was a mini boss so I don't really count him).
Out of those so far, the greatwood was probably the hardest for me but imagine I'll find another boss that fits better

Not op but I had a lot more trouble with bsb and beat gasciogne on my first try. Gasc is easy to parry and his second form gets stuck pretty often. Bsb has more aggressive and erratic attacks over three stages, and you have to worry about poison.

If I remember right during the first phase if you dodge left he will almost always miss you and in the second phase you have to dodge right.

He just has stupid high defence so it's a tanky fight and has massive signals for his attacks so they are easy to dodge.
If you die the first time you will beat him the second as his giveaways and AOE attacks become obvious.

Gascoigne is in the game to teach you about parrying. It's a skill check and he becomes incredibly easy after you realize dodging isn't a very effective method against him.

Maybe it is because I've played it before. Just compared to other bosses he is so boring and simple and good to practice rolling with.
But I strongly believe he takes at most 2 fights to beat solo while other git guds take way more.
Ruin Sentinel is much harder in this regard because tanking with a shield is a stamina drain with multiple bosses when rolling is much smarter and necessary to win solo, or without magic.

Smelter hits really hard, hits fast, has flame pierce, and has a passive AoE burn. Literally everything in his kit is designed to rekt shieldhuggers and scrubs.
The only weakness is that he is extremely predictable, but that doesn't mean anything to bad players and noobs.
DeS: Flamefucker (unless you can cast basic soul arrow in which case it's a cakewalk like the rest of DeS)

I think it mostly has to do with his high defenses dragging the fight along. The longer a fight the more chances there are to screw up. For a new player I'd imagine he'd be very difficult.

Smelter demon is a harder boss mechanically and hitbox-wise. Fume is pathetic, even on NG+ with the enrage. The only thing he has is a bullshit elbow hitbox with phantom range.

He wasn't hard in any sense.
His attacks were easy to doge for the most part
But dark souls 2 had a boner for making bosses change phase by making their swords longer, unblockable, and making their hitboxes harder to tell.
The flames on his sword was illusive. It was hard to tell where it began and ended.
Combined with his huge HP he was more of a slog than a challenge.
When I got hit by Ornstein and Smough, I felt like I deserved it.
Whenever I got hit by Fume Fuck, I swear I dodged it.
Plus Fume Shit is DLC. O & S wasn't.
