Forgot to add that just because an older card, for example a 290x has a higher model number it doesn't mean it's better than a newer 390 with a lower model number. Performance can vary alot between newer and older cards just like a gtx 780 ti is worse than a newer gtx 970.

It is, but it's better to know what's newer. First number is generally which generation, second is which tier in that generation, third is there to be cool.
680 would be enthusiast tier, 750 would be budget tier. If it's a particularly good generational leap, there is a theoretical chance that the 750 would be better but that's really unlikely.
Extra letters and shit are generally there to denote shit being better as well, like TI.
Comparing cards of different generations just based on their names is tricky. It's better to compare benchmarks and shit if you want to be sure.
