The atmosphere of this game was incredible.

I ended up using a PlayStation magazine save file to try, that didn't do it either. The game really fucks you if you don't get amazing rolls on each boss.

If you like ARPGs, play it. It has an interesting battle system but do not under any circumstance think that playing as a mage is possible, it just isn't.

Also, crafting is convoluted as fuck, but rewarding when you find a good weapon. The actual crafting system is easy to access, but the formulas are stupid.

It's less about the battle system but more the variables.

All monsters have an innate weakness and strengths to damage types. They're based on m,onster subtype (human, phantom, dragon etc), elemental (air, earth, fire, physical etc) and damage type (piercing, blunt, edged). To do any real damage early on when you have low strength, you need to have a weapon that is the correct damage type with the best hilt with the best elemental and monster attributes to do real damage, specifically to bosses. You'll probably do 0 base damage on the first golem boss unless you know what to do ahead of time.

More on hilts, a weapon is comprised of a blade, a hilt, and gems that are attached to the hilt. The hilt has different attributes that enhance damage types (piercing etc), and can only be used on certain weapons (swords & daggers, maces & axes etc).

It's heartbreaking knowing how badly the game was rushed. The director himself said that over 50% of the game was cut. Which explains why the story abruptly ends and most of the plot threads are completely dropped.

Yeah, you have one in the catacombs you can get to, but it's not just that. It's knowing to use a blunt, evil weapon with air (?) affinity and that degenerate decreases defense as well as strength (since strength governs both).
