The AI is pretty good so far. Never had more than 4 people in a fight and the role system lets you set their priorities at a fairly granular level. I get the feeling I won't find issues with the AI until late game when fights are harder / more complex.
There is the Reserve Rush system which lets you do crazy super moves when you build up a gauge. I did this Ethereal Blast type move like, three hours in. Pretty cool. Probably other stuff will pop up as I get further in.

None of the SO games are about space exploration. They just take place on largely backwater shitholes with the occasional "ancient super high tech civilization" thrown in.
SO3 had a twist right out of a bad M. Night Shyamalan movie. I almost rage-quit the game because of it. Instead, I rage-quit the game because there was an common enemy that could infinitely juggle me to death.
SO4's story and characters were pretty much crap. However, the game was fun enough to play. I just skipped through all of the cutscenes and powered to the end. No regrets.

Don't underestimate how shit the story gets. SO4 has a solid combat system, nice crafting system, varied locals, lots of fanservice and callbacks to earlier games and some pretty good music, but the story and characters is SO BAD that most people can't even get a 1/10th of the way through.

The camera takes some getting used to. Feels like it zooms in too much when I lock on to an enemy at range. It is very adjustable though. Haven't seen much difference between in-doors and out.

It's like the other Star Ocean's. Not GTA-style open world, but a big inter-connected map with lots of fields, mountains, towns, etc. Like in SO4 you can harvest and mine for stuff. Lots of 'request' quests too, mostly just finding specific things for NPC's.
Characters are very customizable. Equipment, battle skills, and AI. The role system lets you fine-tune their priorities with things like "Insect Killer" or "Defender." You can put several on each person but can't duplicate roles.
You can dynamically switch between which character you control in battle. Everyone is usable except for Relia for some reason. Only the computer can control her. Not sure if this is temporary or there is some story reason for it.

For some of the characters maybe, but yeah, the stories have been garbage since 3, and 1 and 2 weren't exactly something to write home about either. It's like ever since Square-Enix got involved at 3, the plots took a tremendous nosedive while the gameplay got a tremendous adrenaline boost.Which is funny, since the whole plot twist of SO3 was basically a gigantic joke aimed at Square-Enix, only for Tri-Ace to be acquired by them by the time the director's cut / US version released.
