There has never been a great indie game, and only a few good ones. Budget is the #1 limiting factor in being able to achieve your vision. If you want to make a great video game, you probably need $10-1000 million dollars to get it made. Indie games are smaller, shallower, and far less engaging.

Yes it can, but it's a plague on indie games that would otherwise look great but are brought down by such an overused style. While pixel art can be used effectively, just coloring something in that has less resolution than a u on a computer screen looks lazy.

I've tried that but it just doesn't give the proper look I want. I work with layers by moving all of my sprites to gimp after I draw them in MSPaint and yes, it is a decent amount of effort compared to just drawing the sprites, but if it's for a sprite commission then I gotta do what I'm paid to do.
