Which one of these is the best setting for vidya games?
>>

>corsets
I know which one is best for me!
>>
>>332587308

I've never heard of Raypunk before. Is it a new term for that 50's future with rayguns and shit? What is some Raypunk and Dieselpunk films/games I can play?

Is that Diesel Punk image from Oddworld? Reminds me of the trains in Abe's Exodduss.

Steampunk can be really cool but hipsters love to fag it up, I think cyberpunk is the most established though. It's my favorite.
>>
>>332587308

Aether is steampunk though. The theory of aether comes from the victorian age.

cyberpunk - 80s/90s/00s
astropunk - 70s/80s
dieselpunk - 1920s/30s/40s/50s/60s
steampunk-1860s/70s/80s/90s

of course there is some overlap here and there. Steampunk is mainly defined by victorian era. Dieselpunk is art deco and the industry of the early 20th century. There's the space age which is astropunk. It's a lot of optimism for the future. Cyberpunk is more cynical and computer oriented.

This. Sets up easy potential conflict, has nice array of weapons to choose from, more relatable and generally less used.

What would current vision for future be?
Solarpunk?
>everything white and shiny
>clean sustainable energy and production
>utopian society focused on scientific progress
>alternatively, a clean society on the outside, oppressive and tyrannical leadership under it's shiny surface
>>
>>332587308
Diesel > Steam > Cyber > Ray

Easy
>>
There is only one ____punk and thats cyberpunk.
All others are meme shit.
Fuck off.
>>
>>332591408
I would say it wasn't a _punk at all. The suffix definitely suggests a certain crapness to the whole experience.

Solarpunk would probably be the best way to describe it though. Maybe a combination of ascended Cyber and Astro/Ray/Atomic.
>>
>>332587308
i really like steampunk.

suggest good steampunk games to me right now

>Everything must be a punk, even if it lacks any sort of "punk" elements
Another reason to avoid cyberpunk threads on /v/.

You can't slap -punk in front of everything and call it a setting.

"White and shiny" what the fuck? A "punk" for the future would be something like the dirtier parts of Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop or whatever, a more space version of cyberpunk. Big corps ruling entire star systems, smaller corps planets/moons or parts of them, but lots and lots of room on the fringes for individuals to get by or even massively succeed, and who are hired for various clandestine operations, wars, or whatever. Still room for single ship/small gang combat and individual fights, even if there are fleets around too.

I don't think they tends to get a "punk" label though, it's just a particular type of space setting. It definitely is in no way all clean and white though, quite the opposite (perhaps certain private entities might be like that but it's only to contrast how most of the galaxy is).
>>
>>332592623
Too much nuance. Gotta have it be 1982-esque craphole or the post apocalypse.

I still don't think that is really any sort of punk, more just classic future dystopian anon. Stuff like Brave New World is interesting and can make for a good setting but it's not punk, at most it's an alternate possible future vs cyberpunk but along the same sort of timeline (near future, not far future).

If you're talking a "punk" that's set *after* "cyberpunk" and wanted to call it solarpunk or starpunk or whatever then I think space is the clear place, but I think it'd mostly end up as a subset of space opera. Something like Charles Stross' "Eschaton" series maybe, lots and lots of radically distinct competing polities, godlike entities up to shenanigans in the background, etc.

So where does Castlepunk fit into all of this?

I'm talking about things like FFXV and that one cancelled game The Crossing (Valve/Arkane; assets reused for parts of Dishonored, though that's whalepunk, not Castlepunk). Pic kinda related.

Royalty, robots, guns, and knights; a little chivalry and a healthy disregard for the peasantry.

Virtual-punk
Modern ordinary world that is ruled by an omnipresent cyber universe with all eyes everywhere and constantly manipulated information. Basically cyberpunk without the silly ai and cybernetics stuffs but more horrifying genetic engineering and more omnipresent and advanced net.

Or

Depopulated overgrown world with hyper advanced/more durable modern tech and sustainable technology. This has been a thing in modern media for decades now, some part of me thinks its...
Nevermind.

It's a thing.

really REALLY wanted to enjoy Shadow Run Returns but the fantasy element just doesnt suit for me.

In fact I dont think theres evere been a cyberpunk game thats really hit that spot for the vision of cyberpunk in my head.
The closest is probably DE:HR - but even that has things that arent quite right.

Really hoping CDPR come through on 2077

Some super super far future "punk" might look something like Numenera I guess, literally hundreds of thousands to millions of years in the future where you've got a non-super-advanced-but-working, varied set of civilizations that are built upon layer upon layer of previous civilizations which DID get super advanced, sometimes to the point of effective godhood and then they just fucked off, sometimes annihilating themselves or getting degenerating or whatever, but you have this eclectic mix of primitive and advanced and insane blackboxes.

Shadowrun is a genuinely good universe, the SRR games don't do it justice, and one of the only ones ever that got cyberpunk+magic right. Usually it sucks. I don't blame you if you just don't want that element at all, but lorewise it's actually pretty solid and nicely balanced.

Arcanum would be one of the other rare examples, particularly cool precisely because it makes them diametrically opposed forces rather then fusion.

Cyberpunk is the one that actually does merit the term.
>>
>>332596781
I don't think you quite understand what the "punk' suffix means in genre titles. It signifies a seedy underbelly, an anti-authoritarian theme that is laid thick into the foundation of these genres. This is why cyberpunk works so well; the punk aspect of it really shines through. In other settings it's just become a word that you use to signify "setting," it doesn't really mean anything anymore.

I'm the anon who posted >>332593605, and while it'd be retarded to give it an artificial "punk" suffix I do think an outlaw/merc kind of work can at least fit the spirit of the theme (moreso then any of the other non-cyber "punks" really).

I'd be all for a Cowboy Bebop style game similar to what you've described. That's what I wanted to find from Elite: Dangerous and No Man's Sky but it looks like I'll be sorely disappointed from both works if I'm looking for that kind of play style.

Alternatively, if we're talking about "solarpunk" or whatever we've decided to call it, I think the only way that could work is a corporate espionage kinda game. Similar to Mirror's Edge, but with Deus Ex style gameplay. Or to be a "freedom fighter," taking down propaganda and opening the eyes of the public, hoping to start mass civil unrest. But the genre does seem rather limited in its possibilities.
>>
>>332597873
>Cyberpunk + magic
This is literally the reason why I've never touched a Shadowrun game.
Why the fuck would I want to be a goddamned centaur with magic missiles while hacking shit, I just want to hack shit.
I get that it doesn't want to be generic but god, what a waste of a setting.
