90% of the games in this thread aren't even platformers what the fuck are you doing.
>>
>>332550257
La-mulana is really clunky as a platformer. Its quality comes from its puzzle/adventure aspects, which are extremely obtuse to say the least. It might be rewarding if you have a severe type of autism, but most normal people will not be able to beat it without a walkthrough, which completely ruins any value the game has. This is not because it's a difficult game, just because the puzzles are absurd and most people will not wander around aimlessly for hours trying everything to solve a single puzzle, only to be confronted with another

You're literally saying it was too hard for you.

What you're looking for is the puzzles are unique, they aren't obtuse or absurd as you claim, you've just never solved any of their kind.

You're so used to games giving you slight variations of pre-existing puzzles that you can solve easily because you understand the point already.

You're simply complaining the game is innovative and too hard for you, and that anyone who likes it is autistic.

You're a child.

>>
>>332551137
This is really a matter of semantics, but word puzzles are not puzzles to me. They are riddles. The solution is often very outside of the box and requires counter-intuitive thinking. This is typically referred to as "bullshit" in most other games. For instance, in SMB2 (the Japanese one, mind you) invisible blocks and invisible gaps that you can only determine are there by failing to clear them. There is nothing the game has given you to prepare for this. There is no way to deduce what you must do. You must simply stumble upon what the developer has planned for you accidentally.

Admittedly, yes, I am not very good at this. I am logically and rationally minded and I enjoy logic puzzles, where the objective is often clear and the outcome is effected by utilizing the known rules of the game and nothing more.

You sound very angry to be calling someone else a child.

Last time I saw that posted, quite a few people said La Mulana doesn't belong that high. Rabi-Ribi is fine where it is though.

In general, La Mulana has very poor signposting leading to incredible frustration among many players. "Well I beat it so you must suck" - nope, you were just lucky enough to stumble across the right area at the right time, or dedicated enough to FAQ your way through any hard parts.

I was so enamored with the game that I analyzed it and found that it is one of the best designed games of all time--but sure, you can just say I was "lucky" or whatever, you're simply wrong and incredibly butthurt that people could "get" the game and you couldn't.
>>
>>332552384
Someone else. Both games are overrated as fuck and have plenty of flaws. At least La Mulana isn't weeb as fuck and actually feels inspired, though.
>>
I liked Wings of Vi.

>>

So explain why the 2015 re-release significantly tweaked puzzles, if it was supposedly so well-designed before.
>>332552854
Did I say it was bad? No. But it definitely doesn't need to be in a 3x3 as the "best of the best" of Metroidvanias, let alone platformers in general.
>>
>>332553040
Ori's in "Great" tier along with Axiom Verge, Megaman ZX and Castlevania OoE. Don't see ESA and I haven't played it myself, so IDK.

Actually, I was criticizing it by definition, I just didn't go into depth before you went into full defensive babby mode. Second, the sky is occasionally green, so stop using that saying. Finally, you don't know what inductive reasoning is clearly.
>>
>>332553578
I've beaten IWBTG before and if that anti-Lamulana shitposter were to replace everything he said about LM with IWBTG he'd actually be completely right. It's trial and error and gets easy when you die to every possible jumpscare.

Also why wouldn't a fangame count, it's just as much of a game as any other game.

I haven't played Squirreltopia and don't intend on doing so. I 100%'d the other three games.

>>
>>332555313
You do know that the vast majority of the games Wayforward release are licensed shovelware, right?
>>
>>332551582
The puzzles in la-mulana are literally just a combination of,
1. archeological knowledge
2. understanding occult knowledge
3. logic
>>
>>332555470
sure they've made some duds but they've made good games as well soooo
>>
>>332555943
In the very first dungeon area, one of the "puzzles" is walking into a wall with a hidden area behind it, with no visual signposting to indicate the wall should be walked into.
>DKC did it too!
Yes, but DKC never required this shit to complete the game.
>but (insert Metroidvania here)
Uses such areas to hide optional items, and probably gives you a tool to find such areas easier.
>>
>>332555365
no, its terrible.
the dev shilled here on /v/ and i got a copy for free, its pretty shit
>>
>>332557001
>no visual signposting to indicate the wall should be walked into
That's uhh, kinda because there is a literal fucking sign that tells you about it instead.
>>
>>332557372
Where? Not him but I never saw this
>>
>>332557372
I think the game needs a disclaimer telling people to read the manual first.
>>
Cave Story
>>
>>332557475
Did you not scan shit? There's a skeleton right in front of the wall (which would probably satisfy the desire for "visual signposting") that tells you that you can walk through.
>>
>>332557620
Any post other than this is wrong.
>>
>>332557001
I agree that this is a pretty annoying puzzle, but:
1) The corpse next to it says something about the dungeon being strangely connected
2) You clearly have to push the block. Either you need to fall behind it or you need to go through the wall behind it sometimes.
3) That block is exactly on the opposite edge of the map.
4) If you push the block from the wrong direction, it starts to go through the wall

So, there are probably better puzzles to use than your example. That being said, I think the problem with puzzles in games largely stems from the fact that you have to play by the games' rules (coding) when solving them. You never really know when there will be some new mechanic or snippet of code that doesn't really apply to the game elsewhere.

For me personally, I mostly care about action and combat in games, and La Mulana is pretty iffy in both of those regards. Sure, the platforming is designed around the limitations of the character as necessary, but the way they did it is not very good I think. And this is coming from someone who has played most 2D Castlevania games where your character is often restricted in some way. Regardless, I completed La Mulana and accepted it for what it is, I am just sad to see that LM2 looks like it will be the same.
>>
Dustforce, easily. One of the best platformers of all time, not just among indies. Super Meat Boy's pretty good but as challenging or rewarding. Shovel Knight's good for one playthrough but not much else, far worse than the other 2.

Metroidvania + Wonder Boy + I Wanna be the Guy

It wasn't nowhere as cheap as IWBTG though, it's just that it had a lot of insta-kill traps.
