Games with a similar setting to Xenogears and Phantasy Star? I'm talking about the whole retro-futuristic thing
>>
>>332539034
Star Ocean 2 does what you are asking for I think
>>
Some Final Fantasies have it. FF6 has magitech shit.
>>
>>332539096
Looks good. Would you recommend it?
>>
>>332539304
I Liked it, most people consider it the best Star Ocean game
>>
crosscode is literally phantasy star done as a top down action game

Beyond that, hyper light drifter comes out tomorrow and shares a similar aesthetic
>>
>>332539665
Yes. That's why I'm asking. I wanted to try similar games till I can buy HLD

You could try RF Online.

its easily one of the best "retro" style games I've ever seen, unfortunately the dev is kinda slow at making progress on it, but progress is definitely being made. It has skill trees, sidequests, secrets, unlockables, equipment.

It is, 100%, phantasy star as an action game.

>Games with a similar setting to Xenogears

Fuck I wish there was one. The later half of Xenosaga III is the closest thing I have found.
>>
>>332539383
in fact a lot of these people consider it the only good Star Ocean game.

Etrian Odyssey
>>
>>332541727
I remember having really high hopes for RF online.
>>
>>332542248
>Etrian Odyssey
Thank you, but too many lolis
>>
>>332542765
The game never brings up the lolis and you can play with a party of big burly men, EO does weebshit right IMO

Was this made in RPG Maker? Can't tell.
>>
>>332544510
no idea but I'm going to assume no, because it isn't turn based and has incredibly fluid movement and animations.

Oh, ok. I'll give it a try then. Thanks

Xenogears was such a ride, all these years later and still no other games quite like it.

Each time I finish playing it it almost leaves me depressed since nothing since has ever even come close to its greatness.
>>
>>332546085
>>332546395
I know that the lore is really great. But is the story developed in a good way? I ask because I played it and I couldn't go further the cave because I got bored.
>>
>>332544646
Just finished the demo. It was cool. I don't know if it deserves the asking price to be honest. Also the demo didn't offer an exactly deep combat system. Like I said, good, but don't know about the price.
>>
>>332547150
Totally agree, I was lucky as fuck to get it for like 3 bucks a long time ago. It was part of some shitty bundle from indiegala that my friend notified me about because he knew I wanted it.
>>
>>332546973
I pretty much only play JRPGs and I have never played any that even come close to developing such a rich story (and characters) like Xenogears does.

If you only got to the cave, then you've only scratched the tip of the iceberg. Quitting there would be a huge loss for you.
>>
>>332547307
At that price it's definitely worth a grab!
>>
>>332546973
Do you mean when Fei and Bart get trapped under the sand? That's barely into the game at all.
Things can seem a little random in the beginning, but it starts coming together around the end of the Aveh section (I think, been a while), which is only a couple hours past the cave.

There's a noticeable shift in tone around that point. For reference, the random evil military people that sometimes show up in unrelated scenes are more the direction the game goes later.
>>
>>332547307
Also, I'm looking for it on indiegala, but they don't seem to even have it. Are you sure you got it from there? https://www.indiegala.com/store/search?type=games&key=cross&page=1
>>
>>332547628
my bad, it was from bundlestars, killer bundle 6 to be precise.

can't keep track of all of these crappy bundle websites.
>>
>>332546973
It pulls some loops and twists that could fly over people's heads and be compared to typical animu existential mindfuck gibberish, but everything ties together if you have the attention span to connect the dots.
>>
>>332547426
>>332547627
Yes, I know that the game is about 80 hs. long. But I tend to quit games when I get bored (no kidding). But I've been wanting to try it again because of all the comments about how great this game is. Also is the second cd that bad?
>>
>>332547925
Holy fuck that even got Lichdom. that's bretty gud.
>>
>>332548216
yeah...I played about 10 minutes of lichdom and deemed it a horrible joke of a game that barely looked finished. I would not be envious of that.

Though I did see in a thread the other day there is a giant crab boss, which does redeem it a bit.
>>
Ever17 and 999 capture the japanese sci-fiish atmosphere perfectly but those are VN so make your bets.
>>
>>332548141
Like the other anons said, in my experience, the game seriously hooks you in not very long after the desert cave. Up to that point, the characters you've met are still in what I consider the "unlikeable" phase of their honest-to-god character growth.

The second disc is certainly very, very starved for actual gameplay, but by that point I was so invested it really didn't bother me. I needed to see it through to the end. And I'm a Gameplay > Everything guy.
