It's great in the map department, both in size and in design. The combat is good but it feels a bit hack and slash. Graphics are great.
It lacks in map connexions and lore. It's not bad but it's vague. Some of the areas are as pointless as in DaS II, with empty rooms that serve no purpose other than you being there for a while.

If you like it for the lore and the internal consistency DaS I had, you might be underwhelmed. Lots of silly and lazy shit like in DaS II, but with the lore of I.
Some stories are outright solved and ended, like who is the firstborn and the story behind him. Others, like the kindling cycle, are yet again left unfinished.
I feel like the story progressed as Miyazaki said, but this is not the last Dark Souls.
Gameplay wise it's good. It combines the best of all games. Some covenants are fun as fuck, like the purple moundmakers. PVP potential is fantastic.
Some bosses disappointed me and many are somewhat easy for how OP the player is.
Aldrich in particular is outright lazy and a hack job. I was pissed.

Greatsword fags are in luck, they're more OP than ever before.
Faith/Magic is also better than ever. You can have a fuckton of Blue estus and a fuckhuge mana bar.
With some miracles and magic you can skip having regular estus to heal.
Magic seems to suck a bit for PVP though, almost all experienced soulsfags know how to roll properly

From what I gather, the whole story happens because the primordial snakes (imperfect dragons) are jealous of their superior brethren.
They're probably the ones that create or uncover the first flames for the lords to find, and the ones that play the double sided game of fire and dark with everyone.
I think Dark Souls I is just a farn, where both snakes want to get rid of Gwynn each on their own way.

Yes, it has the best pve in the series. The biggest flaw it has however is the recycled content. NPC invaders are often the same as previous ones. Some areas are just the 2.0 version of previous areas in the series. Some bosses are just gimmicks similar to Demon's Souls, it works for some but others are disappointing.
I feel like the final boss represents the game very well. The first phase has some interesting boss mechanics, giving it the biggest moveset out of any boss in the series, but then it gets interrupted by what can only describe as a "nostalgia phase." Depending on how much that kind of thing bothers you is going to enjoyment of the game.

I beat the game.
The early game bosses are piss easy and the late game ones are really challenging overall the game feels short now that im on my second playthrough. Music is top tier and there are cool easter eggs from DaS1 like the dead mushroom men in the poison forest area. Final boss is ok I think Child of Kos might be a more challenging though not sure. Covenants are cool but haven't explored them to completion. Currently doing Rosaria's Fingers and invading.
