I've read the first something like 6 Drizzt novels back in the day when they were first released, and absolutely loved them. However back then my English reading comprehension was still sort of on a half-understand/half-guesswork level, so when I picked up the first Dark Elf book a few months ago I was horrified to realize just how badly written it was.
On the other hand it made me want to try another DnD book, so I gave War of the Spider Queen a try. Loved the first one, they pulled of the whole "cast of backstabbing cunts" thing surprisingly well. Menzoberranzan in that book felt like a place that actually just might work, which is an amazing achievement on the author's part.
Too bad the rest of the series was complete dogshit, with the fourth book being one of the worst fantasy books I've ever had the misfortune of reading. But at least the fifth and sixth books somewhat redeem it with the Archmage versus Lichdrow duel, that takes up like one third of those books.

The BG1EE UI still looks better than original BG1 one. And BG2EE UI is literally a fine tuned and improved version of original BG2 one (and there's an official mod that lets youj use the BG2EE UI in BG1EE).
BG1EE UI does indeed look kinda meh but it's quite literally based on the UI from the cancelled PS1 version of BG1 which had that exact dark blue and gold color scheme and everything.

I tried to play most of the games on /vg/ roguelike list but in truth I found them even more simplistic combat-wise and lacking pacing. One I liked was the Alien ASCII one, but then again it lacked tons of content - however there was no issue with pacing. There was also some kind of Lovecraftian one that was ridiculously amped up right from the start.
What I like are dungeon crawlers where combat is more action-y, real time and where exploration is better designed. Like Arx Fatalis and King's Field / Shadow Tower.

In fact most of the times I'm satisfied after gouging the way something was made, put into motion and designed because I rarely care for the plot like I do for the interactive storytelling (gameplay and map design). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe any content was written for Forton. His character was just a concept they proposed during (or shortly after, I don't remember) the Kickstarter, when most things about PoE, including the setting, the story, the other companions were at best still in the brainstorming state. A lot of things changed about pretty much every companion that were announced back then. Do we even know for sure if Forton was Avellone's idea?
Tyranny must have been an annoying experience but the timing doesn't seem to match. By his own admission he was Project Lead only during pre-production. Considering Tyranny had been in development since early 2014, I find it unlikely pre-production lasted until mid-2015. Although I can imagine the project going nowhere and him getting sacked, would explain a lot about the game's low budget look and short length.
I agree with you that it was something that was building up, but I'm just not sure about what was the final catalyst. I think there is something we are still missing.

Forton was Avellone's idea and there was never actual writing done to him but the core concept for him was in place, he was supposed to be this drunken angry monk figure.
Tyranny definitely went beyond pre-production by that time point, but it's clearly one of the factors that made Avellone upset. Anyone would be really. As for going nowhere, I doubt it since Avellone is not known to have problems with deadlines, quite the opposite really. He's known for making more shit than he's told to and basically always overworking himself.
I can agree that we may not know if any of these were the "final" catalyst but those things were definitely the major reasons building up to him fucking off from Obshitian.
