Dude it's literally just ONE LAYER of high resolution textures. You don't know shit.

An average modern game uses at least 3 layers of textures.

1. The original texture picture.
2. A normal map that defines where the bumps are in the texture and how it reacts to light.
3. Specular map that defines where are shiny parts on a texture and how shiny they are.
4. And sometimes an occlusion map or the equivalent of tesselation in more recent games.

The last 3 can be combined into one image but it's still requires insane amount of memory compared to one high res texture.

I been waiting for this shit for like an year and half already, it looks kinda far still, and yes I am aware the castle was the biggest challenge but still. Kinda feel bad for complaining since its apparently 2 guys.

The last third of the game is full of rocks and metal grating. It shouldn't be as bad, a lot of the textures should be reusable. The castle was full of huge-scale art, everything was hand-carved wood and tapestries. Have you seen the shit where they track down the tables/dressers the original textures were based on? The island should be a tiny fraction of that time.

yeah, two guys, dealing with one fairly large game without proper mod-tools, traveling around Europe in search for the original source structures of the textures.

Year and a half is literally nothing in game development. If anything, the assembly-line game building practiced by AAA giants like Ubisoft has twisted people's view on how much work a game-development really can be.

The Steam version doesn't want to function for me. What I mean is, at 1-3 shortly into the swamp area, the game consistently crashes. I've found no workaround or "fix" that helps, so the game is uncontinuable.

I've tried the demo of the village. Incredible work, definitely the best HD retexturing I've ever seen. It's a good thing that the game doesn't use normal maps, it makes work much faster. I wonder if they will retexture characters as well.

The only available version on steam now is not the shit PS2 port. I bought it recently.
The cutscenes are not prerendered like in the PS2 version. So it's definitely good and playable without any problems. I think the mouse controls work okay too, but I cannot confirm it, I'm using a controller.

Back when the game was made, consoles had something like 4MB of VRAM and 32 more of regular system memory. Nowadays 1GB+8GB is the cutoff point for toasters.

And that's just memory, not even saying anything about processing power.
