Don't summon for this fight or the outskirts you dingus. By summoning other phantoms for help you drastically increase enemy defenses and poise. If you go in solo (with the NPC knights) you can deal with the charred knights easily.

First of all, you have the bonfire right next to the boss. Usually you have to go through the area one more time before getting another shot at the boss.
Also the knights are part of the boss fight themselves. If it was just a duel with the king, the boss would be really easy. You wouldn't have to make multiple tries to beat him.

I would rather have the king one shot me than fighting the knights every time, it's tedious and annoying, is not fun to fight 10 strong enemies every time, it loses it's difficulty really fast and becomes a 3 minute loading screen. Theres no cool level design, no fun battles, no shortcuts. Is just another boring unskipable fight in an open area between me and the boss.

I like the design and the arena, but the fight itself is shit. His swings are slow and his leap attack is heavily telegraphed.
As far as big armoured guy fights go my favorite is either Raime or Alonne. Raime mixes it up with his two weapons and similarly Alonne varies the charge time on his attacks so both fights keep you on your toes.
Honorable mention to Artorias and (no shield) Gwyn just for how aggressive they are.

Fume was great because he has quite large moveset, and used it however he saw fit. Often he'd omit the final attack, but sometimes he'd do a full combo, catching the unaware player off-guard.

That was the point of Fume and Alonne, they're complete opposites of each other. Fume mixes medium to slow attacks to fuck with your mind and Alonne goes from one position to another in a flash for the same effect.

Also, here's a tip for farming Loyce Souls - do it as a summoned phantom, assisting another player in their world. The drop rate is much higher for phantoms than for the host.

They crippled the gameplay in favor of the lore then.
Sir Alonne has about 20 knights you have to defeat in order to challenge him but they stay behind the fog once the battle starts.
