As a person who owns a PS4 and owned a PS3. One of the pros of getting a PS3 over an Xbox 360 was you did not have to pay for playing online and PS plus being just a nice little thing you could opt for deals and free shit.
I only use PS plus to play online games and if it were free to play online I would not get it because the only other good thing about it is the free games which usually consist of 4 shit titles for the PS4.

It's the same reason Nintendo makes limited prints and split versions so you will buy the rest on the e-shop.
