It was back when I was in highschool. I would play the game everyday. I had the gamecube version. If I recall, that version showed you the potential of the chao's stat by a letter grade. I think A was maximum? I don't think they were using S ranks at that time.
But basically, I figured out how to save scum, in order to breed better and better choas. Until a couple of my chaos had all A ranks.(Though, A ranks aren't equal. Some are better than others)
And then I gave the chao crazy amounts of drives to level him up. Until he was a destroyer of worlds. Too fast, too strong.

Didn't you have to spend insane amounts of time with your chao to actually have things happen with them? I remember leaving my gamecube on overnight to have them learn to feed themselves. But I never once saw them mating or the cocoon or anything, because I didn't stay in the garden for hours.

Yeah, it was worth and I don't regret. It is too much time consuming getting chao to beat those last races. And on the Dreamcast you could not see the stats in game, I think you could only see those when Chao Adventure. And the blackmarket was an online thing just for getting new colored chao. You could get some fruits on Chao Adventure but that thing could be random as hell.
