This disaster was my first handheld.
I later got a GBC to get in on the Pokémon craze with Blue version, but aside from that game I hardly spent any time using the GBC.
I learned after that. I skipped the GBA and emulated it later. I skipped the DS until picking one up for cheap at a yard sale, then put a flash cart in it and downloaded some of the games I missed. I still barely use it; I want a full size screen and a controller that doesn't hurt my hands.
If the NX isn't backwards compatible with 3DS games, I'll probably get a 3DS/2DS in a few years and pirate the games I've missed for that too.

N3DS XL is probably a better way to go at this point. Nintendo just has poor quality control and you might end up with a shit one or a good one. Either way, make sure you get one from somewhere with a good return policy and test it thoroughly before doing a data transfer.

GBA is kind of a weird case since they boot the 3ds into ds mode, and then run the roms in GBA mode of the 3ds's DS mode, but it works fine to play the games

GBA is literal simulation from original hardware. GBC can be run from emulation perfectly (anything can, tho), SNES has Virtual Console for the SNES that runs almost everything perfectly except chip games like Yoshi's Island or SMRPG.
