Did anyone watch yesterday's Giant Bomb stream on the Rift?

Did anyone watch yesterday's Giant Bomb stream on the Rift? What a fucking joke.

>Their main title looks like shit and has microtransactions up the ass (EVE Valkyrie)
>Neat looking games where the VR shit makes the experience considerably clunkier instead of benefiting it in any way (Chrono, Fly to Kuma, Lucky's Tale)
>Ports of games with added unimpressive VR that gets old (and possibly nauseating) quickly (The Vanishing of Ethan Carther, Elite: Dangerous, Albino Lullaby)
>Steam Greenlight tier games (Dreadhalls, Into the Dead, Dead Secret, whatever other horror shit there was there)
>Ports of Mobile games (Hacknet, Vektron Revenge)
>"Interactive VR" (4 minute movies, most of them aimed at children)

What a fucking disaster. Literally just a more expensive Kinect with about as much good content. You're better off just waiting on all of the decent games for this shit to come out somewhere else where it will control better.

Let's face it. VR is just a meme technology. It's not the future of gaming, it's just another gimmick and you're an idiot if you fell for it.

Also: Jeff > Vinny > Brad (With Jeff around) > Drew > Jason > Jeff Bakalar >>> Rorie >>> Dan >>> Austin > Alex
>>
All the anti-VR posters read like one guy who's exceptionally salty over how VR is getting off the ground.

Of what? Without big market you won't get AAA titles (and you need some good looking FPS games), only trashy indie shit for 15-30$, like in this stream.

It's still super new. Only people that should get it now are enthusiasts. Where people actually expecting really good games on the first day out of something brand new?

Come on you're not fooling anyone. Everyone wants it for porn. As soon as you're alone with it the first thought in your head is "is there porn for this? i should get some". That's why everyone is buying it the games aspect is just a cover and a nice cherry on top everyone knows the games will be shit.

Nah, that's Dan.

Imagine being Drew in that room and having to be all like "damn, Dan Ryckert, you fuckin' funny, all hilarious with your mcgrubber jokes and wrestling references. I would totally hang out with you, both as co-workers and real friends." when all he really wants to do is fuck another 16 year old in his dressing room. Like seriously imagine having to be Drew and not only sit in that chair while Dan Ryckert flaunts his useless dadrock knowledge in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing his missing tooth and balding spot, and just sit there, video after video, hour after hour, while he perfects his humor. Not only having to tolerate his obnoxious fucking jokes but his proud chuckles as everyone on the office tells him he's SO FUNNY and DAMN, DAN RYCKERT IS *THIS* WITTY? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and listen to his fifteenth fucking 90s Action Movie reference you didn't even remember before that day. You've been fucking nothing but a healthy diet of blonde gay boys and mexican friends of Alexis for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in California. You've never even heard anyone this fucking obnoxious before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out of his baldspot as he turns his head expecting your laughter, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and revel in his "Norm Macdonald (for that is what he calls himself)" humor, the humor he worked so hard for with Saturday Night Live Show DVD's in the previous months. And then Jeff calls for another Quick Look, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the CBSI security could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Drew. You're not going to lose your future pornstar career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

A good escort will cost you upwards of 100$ per hour.

A cheap hooker will cost you as low as 25$ for 30 mins, sex is shitty, but at least in Spain we get hot Russian girls.

A girlfriend will cost you a lot more time and money and requires you're not a piece of shitty. It also means dating a lot of crazies, basic bitches, and boring gals to get a keeper.

A golddigger will cost you a fortune.

A mail order bride goes for upwards of 5000$.

An Android will probably be even more.

Weighing the cost benefits, VR porn is definitely the cheapest option you imbecile.

You might get good games, but the VR will still be just a 3D TV where your head acts like a mouse.

People who legitimately believe VR will flop are incredibly nearsighted for only looking at the gaming side of things.

Even in entertainment alone, the broad spectrum of applications is staggering, and they're already starting to come out.

The comparison to 3DTVs is beyond retarded, since those didn't have any applications outside of being an expensive novelty that barely worked.

VR and HDMs actually have a fuckton of applications that will revolutionize many industries. It's here to stay dumbasses. Don't buy the first gen, but you should start saving up to buy your headset a good 2-5 years from now.

I'd say 5 years bare minimum. It'll be slow going just because of the cost, monetary and hardware wise. It's too much of an investment to get a meaningful sample, when most people won't bother contributing meaningful feedback.
The hardware is cool now, but once they get the kinks worked out and devs get some guidelines down it'll be bad. So bad.

There are plenty of cheap low end headsets out already though. As cheap as 15€ thanks to Google in fact.

300-400 is a reasonable price range that people are willing to pay, and you underestimate the rapid growth and expansion of technology.

Just look at the smartphone. How long did it take from the iphone, to smartphones being given away for free?

7 years, and 3 years in, smartphones were affordable and mainstream. Today they're basically a necessity due to the broad range of uses. VR will follow similar footsteps, especially since Jewberg is pushing it due to "potential for social interactions." This is just the start, you have NO IDEA how big this is about to explode. You don't have every major multinational shilling this shit hard and pouring billions into it if it's not going anywhere.

VR and HMDs will be a hot item in about 2 years I say. By 2020 it will be a mainstream staple.

Mark my words.

Seriously, just look at all the shit it can do and potential it offers outside of gaming, and the picture is crystal fucking clear. A VR headset that ACTUALLY FUCKING WORKS? That's a goldmine that had been waiting to be tapped into for decades. People have been waiting for that since before Back to the Future.

>>
>>332408527
>All of those will get better soon enough.

>lack of games
It isn't lack of games, but lack of real games. Vr have tons of indie and mobile shit and nothing else.
>>
>>332408662
That's because of the small install base. You still have a handful of major games to play at launch, and as adoption rates increase, which they undeniably will due to the multiple uses they bring, you'll start to see major devs jump on board.

For now you'll mostly see a couple major games for it here and there. Maybe a killer app or two. And a bunch of "compatible" games that have added the extra function.

Again, give it 2-5 years.

Pong started on a oscilloscope. Think about what had to happen to make it work.
>>

>>
>>332414270
A device for measuring frequency in electronics. But you already knew that, right?

I am fucking glad I didn't pre-order the Rift just because it was the first one. The support for it seems fucking terrible at that point, and no motion controls seems like a big negative.
Writing it off right now is fucking stupid though, especially considering the Vive is right around the corner. I'm interested to see how the Vive will compare, and if third party support will be not shit in the future.
>>
>>332414474
OK, so you don't actually know what it is. I've worked with them, even old ass ones. It's not impressive they ran it on an oscilloscope, it's impressive they got computers working in general back then.
>>

>>
>>332414669

I know a lot of descriptions. You can describe whatever you want. That doesn't mean you know what it is, what it does, or how it works.

>>
>>332414928
Weird to say that, considering you asked him if he knew what it is, but then dismiss anything he could've said because apparently being able to describe what it does/how it works/what it is doesn't make you know what it is. I don't know what you expected then.
But that doesn't make you saying he doesn't know what it is based on a correct description any more logical anyway.

This is the first time you mentioned that aspect. Don't expect people to know that you're talking about this when you don't fucking mention it dipshit. Also, just assuming people don't know what it is because they gave a short description instead of the full wikipedia entry is shortsighted as well, there's no reason to assume he doesn't know what it is just because he gave a right description that was shorter than you had in your mind.

>Fighting me just proves you have no idea what you're talking about.
First, I never gave a description for an oscilloscope. Second, I'm merely talking about you dismissing something solely because a right description. You never claimed the description wasn't expanded on enough.
You're a huge fucking retarded.

Seems like it's the FOV that you'll see when you look through it. Just look at the numbers on either the horizontal or vertical axis, bigger is better.
Rift CV1 seems to have less FOV than even the fucking DK2, and way less than the Vive.

That is, if I'm reading it correctly.

LoL, anyone seen the pathetic "plz like VR" sticky-post from Evilore on NeoGAF??

Damage control in full force. I'm laughing my ass off. Not even the shills on NeoGAF will save VR!
>>
>>332416574

You misunderstood his post. It's still pathetic but for a different reason. He makes money off of advertising on the site and the more threads there are the more independent hits they are getting. That thread was basically saying to make sure to keep posting new threads for new news instead of keeping it all in one thread.

It's the same reason why neogaf doesn't have a bunch of sub forums and larger community threads are sent off to die/they go into community threads and ban/force people to post elsewhere as well.

Also, there is no risk of VR needing "saving".
>>
>>332417136

Yeah, you probably right. It's still super pathetic. I think he also did that to make sure the forum becomes "VR friendly". Just watch this MOFO tell all his mods to ban negative VR comments, just to make sure Sony, or any other VR company, is not afraid of placing VR adds on there.
>>
>>332417776

Well that defiantly was a part of it as well, make sure people don't just shitpost and port beg in every VR thread, but I really don't think he cares one way or the the other if it does good or fails, it's just whatever generates more ad revenue for his site.

Has anyone ever wondered why the sudden push for VR in the last couple of years? Seems everyone wants on the VR train, including companies like Facebook.

Whats really going on has nothing to do with virtual reality. Its about selling the next big consumer tech. For years companies have been searching for the next must-have electronic device. Google glass. Apple watch. Wearables. They are hoping to make a product that sells with the same popularity as the smartphone.

So the wearable market leads nowhere. So whats next? VR. Like the 3D TV it is another attempt to get you to buy another electronic device you dont really need. They are seriously hoping to emulate the success of the smartphone and VR is just another attempt.

So its never been about the games. Its never been about the experience. Its all about sales and cornering a market they hope will bring in mountains of profit.

So yes VR will fail, just like 3D, just like wearables. Because in the end we dont need it for anything. Its all about marketing.
>>
>>332413330
That's because you actually want exaggerated head movement when playing a Racing game. No one wants to fucking actually have to turn your head all the way to the left to look to the left of your car. You have no peripheral vision with VR so that's what you'd have to do.

Track AR exaggerates the head movements, so you can do that just fine while still looking at the screen and the road.
>>
>>332418837
They saw Rift was super popular so other companies tried to release their VR before people realize it's shit. For example there's literally no reason for Valve to make VR, they just do it for the marketing. Sony also does it to make more people buy PS4 and more games.
>>
>>332419148
This is the reality. Just a bunch of companies trying to jump into a soft market that probably won't pan out, but it costs barely anything to try and you'll probably re-coup costs if you're quick enough.

Past the first year though, it'll be dead until the next resurgence, which will be either in 5 years, or in 2 if Apple gets on board and sells a plastic case you can snap your iPhone 7 into for 100 bucks.
>>
>>332419148
Right it seems like their goal is to push some units, make some profit, then when it fails say "oh well we tried" and walk away with the cash.

That's the impression I got from watching the Giantbomb stream yesterday. It just looks like it socks so bad, like their focus was on sales and not quality.
>>
>>332419097
No, that's not the issue with the rift. The issue is that the resolution is a joke, and you can't fucking see your actual hands or your actual wheel. 1:1 movement would be fine, you'd be able to actually use your car mirrors.
>>
>>332419473
>like their focus was on sales and not quality.
Because there is no quality to be had. It's just another in a long line of gimmicks that can't reasonably take off.

AR will be big. VR is just an offshoot of AR, not a separate field.
>>
>>332419751
>AR will be big
This.
Ar have very bright future in everyday life.
>>
>Wii was super popular
>MS and Sony jumped immediately on the motion control gimmick
>next gen
>no one gives a fuck about motion control even though they could make it much better now
This will be the future of VR. People lose interest and it will be immediately dropped.
>>
>>332419917
Good. Let's hope there aren't any more shitty gimmicks after we're through this one.
>>
>>332419917
The Wii had the full force of the clueless casual market behind it. As did smartphones, as did tablets.

VR has absolutely zero penetration with normies. It was doomed the day it was conceived, at least in its current iteration.

>>
>>332420175
>AR shit which is literally VR 2.0
Not really m8.
VR = isolation from real world, that's why it is doomed and can be successful only in niche market.
AR - actually enhance real world, and all you need to access it - simple goggles, or even contact lenses in the near future.
>>
>>332420175
>>AR shit which is literally VR 2.0
AR requires HUGE advances to actually be viable. We're talking low latency object tracking from a camera on your glasses, and screens that are transparent and opaque at the same time.

>I'm sure lots of casuals backed the Rift.
A few thousand, tops. When I'm talking casuals, I'm talking about your mom playing fucking candy crush, not some dumb rich kids off Reddit.
>>
>>332420447
>simple goggles, or even contact lenses in the near future.

I wouldn't say near future. It needs a ton to work well. From camera tech to battery tech. It will be something that will be huge eventually though.

AR has the advantage of actually being useful compared to VR. You can have a true HUD on your windshield with lots of useful information. Military uses are obvious, as well as aviation amd even naval applications.

VR just seems to isolating, limiting its usefulness to fantasy and games.
>>
>>332420775
You don't understand it at all. If you can display objects well on your glasses, there's nothing stopping you from blacking out the display and playing the exact same VR experiences.

Only, when you're done, you don't have to take off a clunky headset, you just hit a fucking button and make the lenses transparent again.

Hololens is a fancy tech-demo at best, there's no way they'd sell it in its current state. But in terms of futuristic concepts, it's the only way this can possibly go.
